Franchise pictures dominate the box office, which is why all studios want nothing more than to find the next MCU. This is hard to pull off, and all genres are welcome to try. We've seen a failed horror franchise fall flat with the Dark Universe, and we've also see video games try taking a stab at it, with a mixed degree of success.

The Tomb Raider franchise is one that has had multiple attempts at being a box office powerhouse, and fans would love to see it come back. They even have an actress for Lara Croft in mind: Aubrey Plaza.

Is Plaza going to play Lara Croft on the big screen? Let's take a look and see what the star said about playing the character!

Aubrey Plaza Is Known In The Comedy Space

Aubrey Plaza is a performer who has been popular for quite some time now. Her unique sense of comedy and unmistakable delivery have helped her stand out, and she's had a fantastic career in entertainment so far.

Plaza was a relative unknown prior to landing the role of April on Parks and Recreation, but that show helped turn her into a household name. The fact that she consistently stood out while performing alongside such a talented cast on the show is proof of how great she is at her craft.

Outside of Parks and Recreation, Plaza has found a wealth of success in other projects. She's on quite a roll, and the future looks bright for the star.

Plaza's popularity could land her in virtually any major franchise, including one that could use some refreshing.

The 'Tomb Raider' Franchise Needs A Refresh

'90s video game fans are undoubtedly aware of the attempts at making Tomb Raider a massive franchise on the big screen. There has been a mixed degree of success, to say the least.

Originally, Angelina Jolie took on the role of Lara Croft in 2001. That film was sneaky good, and it made nearly $275 million, giving way to a sequel project. The sequel, however, only raked in $160 million, and which canceled all plans for a third installment.

Cut to 2018, and the franchise made a return with Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft. The film itself was no critical darling, but it was able to make nearly $275 movie, just like Angelina Jolie's first ride as the character.

A sequel to this was in the works for some time, by MGM lost the rights to the IP, and suddenly, the once-promising franchise came to a screeching halt.

The studio that gets the rights to Tomb Raider will want to get a project off the ground immediately, and if fans have their way, Aubrey Plaza would be the right choice for the character. However, it takes two to tango, and we need to know if Aubrey Plaza is on board for a major franchise role.

Audrey Plaza Wants The Lara Croft Role

So, would Aubrey Plaza be down to play Lara Croft in a fresh take on Tomb Raider? Though she's not known as an action star, the challenge is one that Plaza is down for.

"Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it. It was so funny when he texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it," she told Newsweek.

Plaza then went on to share her feelings about Lara Croft, and about having no aversion to big-budget blockbusters.

"I love action movies, and I don’t discriminate against big movies or small movies. I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That’s an iconic character. She’s the original badass," she continued.

This is great for fans to hear, but as of now, it doesn't amount to much. There are a lot of moving pieces involved with getting a star on board for a major franchise picture, but fans have had a hand in shaping casting before.

Earlier this year, John Krasinski finally played Reed Richards in Multiverse of Madness. It's unlikely that he will continue playing the character, but the fans' vocal support got him on board with Marvel.
