For a movie star to enjoy a great deal of success, the masses have to like them. As a result, it makes all the sense in the world that most famous actors do their best to come off well during interviews. Unfortunately, it is no secret that a lot of so-called likable movie stars can be incredibly demanding behind the scenes.

Even though Ben Affleck has been a controversial star at times, the consensus seems to be that he is a pretty easy to get along with guy. For example, it is pretty remarkable that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have remained close friends for decades. After all, both of them have had to deal with all of the pressure that comes along with being internationally famous.

Unfortunately for everyone involved in the production of Ben Affleck’s best film, the actor was extremely unreasonable at one point during the filming process. In fact, after Affleck made an obviously ridiculous demand and it wasn’t met, he initially refused to budge which could have put a permanent end to the movie’s production.

Ben’s Best

Released in 2014, a lot of people consider Gone Girl to be Ben Affleck’s best movie by far. Almost universally acclaimed by critics, Gone Girl earned an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. On top of that, Gone Girl was nominated for a slew of different awards including Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and SAGs.

More important than the praise Gone Girl received from critics, the movie was embraced by moviegoers everywhere. In fact, according to IMDb users, Gone Girl is Affleck’s best film aside from Good Will hunting and that doesn’t really count since Ben has such a small role in that film. While there are many reasons why film fans love Gone Girl, the spellbinding plot, incredible score, masterful direction, and great performances from Affleck and Rosamund Pike are the most notable.

Near Catastrophe

Throughout director David Fincher’s career, he has proven time and time again that he has an extremely strong vision for all of his films. As a result, Fincher’s movies all have a unique feel that a lot of other directors have tried to imitate even though it is near impossible to duplicate.

When Ben Affleck signed up to star in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, you’d think that he would understand that the director has a specific vision for every scene in his films. Despite that, Affleck wasn’t willing to wear a specific hat for one Gone Girl scene which resulted in the movie’s production completely shutting down for four days.

In the film Gone Girl, Ben Affleck’s character finds himself needing to blend in while in New York. Given the location of the scene, David Fincher made the perfectly reasonable decision to instruct Affleck to wear a Yankees hat since they are common in the Big Apple. Unfortunately for everyone involved, that typically unremarkable instruction resulted in all hell breaking loose.

While talking to the New York Times in 2014, Ben Affleck revealed why he completely refused to wear a Yankees hat on film. “I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you. ‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”

Based on Ben Affleck’s own comments about his reasons for refusing to wear a Yankees hat, it seems like he didn’t want to be razed by his friends. On the face of things, that is an extremely ridiculous reason to shut down a movie, especially since so many people work on a film and they could have lost their jobs. On top of that, it is Affleck’s job to pretend he is other people so why should he care about the hat a fictional character he is portraying has on?

Ultimately, David Fincher and Ben Affleck’s representatives struck a deal that led to the actor wearing a Mets hat instead. Still frustrating months later, Fincher spoke about the situation when he recorded a commentary track for Gone Girl. “I really wanted it to be a Yankees cap but [inhales loudly], being from Boston and not being very professional as an actor, Ben refused to wear a Yankees cap. I mean it did not come to blows but we had to shut down production for four days.” In the middle of talking about the whole situation, Fincher exhales deeply which is quite telling and he also calls Affleck’s conduct “entirely unprofessional”.

Thankfully for Ben Affleck and David Fincher, they seem to have put their differences behind them as they appeared to enjoy talking on camera for Variety’s Directors on Directors series. In all fairness to Affleck, it should also be noted that it takes two to tango and Fincher played a pivotal role in all of the drama.
