Over the last few decades, it has become widely agreed upon that the world is in the midst of a golden age of television. After all, every year a slew of great new shows that the masses need to see come out. Of course, one of the main reasons why television is so excellent these days is that there are so many channels and streaming services producing fantastic series.

Even though smaller channels and streaming services play a pivotal role in the modern television landscape, there still is no doubt that the networks reign supreme in terms of relevance. For example, The Big Bang Theory was one of the most talked-about shows in the world throughout its twelve-season run.

Thankfully for everyone involved in the production of The Big Bang Theory, the show remained extremely successful until the very end. However, that isn’t to say that most of the show’s fans thought the series never dipped in quality over the years. Instead, there seems to be a consensus among fans that the show went downhill after a certain thing happened.

A Truly Beloved Show

Ever since The Big Bang Theory debuted on television in 2007, there has been a very vocal group of people that go out of their way to bash the series online. Despite the show’s haters, there are loads of The Big Bang Theory fans that love the series so much that they want to know everything they can about what went on behind the scenes.

On top of all the praise The Big Bang Theory has received from fans, the show has won and been nominated for a staggering amount of awards over the years. The show also was a big enough hit to ensure that its stars were rich and famous when it came to an end.

Negative Storylines

Even though The Big Bang Theory was a behemoth in the ratings throughout its run, the show had more than its fair share of storylines that were hard to stomach. For example, a lot of fans of the series found it very frustrating that over time Bernadette became portrayed as too much like Howard’s mother. On top of that, seeing the once sweet Bernadette become unnecessarily harsh was bad as well.

Another storyline that many The Big Bang Theory fans couldn’t stand was Raj’s relationship with Lucy even though it seemed like they could be a cute couple when she was first introduced. Instead, Lucy quickly became so wishy-washy and whiny that her appearances became extremely tedious. Of course, Lucy was only a symptom of a larger problem since Raj’s love life in the latter half of the series was frustrating as a whole. For proof of that, all you have to do is look at the fact that most TBBT fans were annoyed by several of Raj’s love interests.

Some of the other storylines that bothered a lot of fans include Leonard and Priya dating, Penny and Leonard losing their spark, and Penny thinking she slept with Raj.

Jumping The Shark

Since The Big Bang Theory has an extremely devoted fan base, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that there has been a lot of discussion about the show online. For example, there are Reddit threads and Quora questions asking one simple question, when did The Big Bang Theory have its jump the shark moment.

Even though there are several The Big Bang Theory moments and storylines that are unpopular, there seems to be a consensus about what made the show go downhill. After all, when a Quora user asked about The Big Bang Theory’s jump the shark moment, pretty much every answer was related to the show becoming all about couples. On top of that, an article on The Guardian contends that the show fizzled out because “once the geeks got the girls the show’s family-friendly comedy was smothered in cosiness”.

On the Subreddit r/bigbangtheory, a user asked the rather blunt question “When exactly did Big Bang Theory begin to go to s**t?” Since the subreddit is dedicated to the most passionate fans of The Big Bang Theory, it makes sense that the top reply responded that the show was great until the end. Aside from that, the most upvoted reply made it clear that Penny and Leonard getting married was the moment that set the show’s permanent decline in motion.

“I'll give Amy and Bernadette a break and say it was when Penny and Leonard got married. The show was more palatable, even in this Relationship Agreement era, until that marriage set in motion this strict adherence to stories being about the separate couples and virtually abandoning the core identity of the show.”
