Unlike some comedians who spend all of their time talking about their families or strange things they’ve noticed, Bill Maher has often liked to discuss bigger topics onstage. One topic that Maher has come back to many times is his belief that getting married is a bad deal.

Amazingly enough, Bill Maher has dragged marriage so many times during his career that the YouTube channel Mostly Bill Maher Clips put together a montage of his take on the subject. To sum up Maher’s jokes about marriage, he clearly seems to be against the whole arrangement.

On top of cracking jokes about marriage, Bill Maher has also clearly been against marriages in general during interviews. When Maher appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, Bill expressed his confusion about why people want the government involved in their love life.

“I never understood the concept of marriage. Because, when people would say, “Why don’t you want to get married?’ I’d say “Why would I invite the federal and state government into my love life?’” Later in the same interview, Bill Maher and Joe Rogan spoke about how financially ruinous divorce often is.

Why Bill Maher Almost Certainly Won’t Get Married

On top of not understanding why anyone would want to get married, Bill Maher has been very specific that he never intends to walk down the aisle. In fact, Maher once brought up his plan to stay unmarried forever in a court filing.

According to Bill Maher’s ex-girlfriend Nancy “Coco” Johnsen’s lawsuit, the comedian was abusive and he promised to marry and have kids with her which led to her quitting her job.

On top of Bill Maher’s court response labeling all of Johnsen’s claims false, the filing completely rejected the idea that anyone would believe he intended to get married.

In Bill Maher’s court filing, the comedian was referred to as “a confirmed bachelor, and a very public one at that”. As for why Maher is so certain that he will always remain a “confirmed bachelor”, Bill is very open that he doesn’t think he could ever commit to just one woman.

When Bill Maher made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the host was open about how much he enjoys being married. On top of that, Stern has spoken about how much his wife improved his life in the past.

On the other hand, when Bill Maher spoke to Howard Stern during the aforementioned interview, he described the idea of being with the same person for years like it was unfathomable.

“I never understood how you can be with the same person just day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, I just don't get that."

At another point in the same Howard Stern interview, Bill Maher expressed how much he enjoys being alone. “Love it.” Maher also stated that he enjoys the freedom that not having a wife affords him. "I like all my time. To decide what to do with all my time."

Finally, Bill Maher remarked in that same interview that not having a wife or kids has allowed him to accumulate so much wealth that he became a part-owner of the New York Mets.

Given all the ways that Bill Maher clearly thinks that being unmarried has improved his life, it seems very hard to believe he will ever walk down the aisle. Still, Gene Simmons was just as adamant that he would never get married for decades and then he did, so you never know.
