When Steve Irwin shockingly died in 2006 when he was attacked by a stingray, the world was pretty shocked. We lost a legend that day — a man who went above and beyond when it came to teaching the world about wildlife and conservation. Although Steve tragically died, his daughter Bindi Irwin continues to carry on his legacy and follow in his footsteps. She is also very in to conservation and wildlife, and much like her father, shares her knowledge with the world. Bindi might’ve lost her father, but she will always keep his memory alive somehow.

10 She's Named After A Crocodile

In 1998, Steve and Terri Irwin welcomed their first child, a beautiful daughter born on July 24. They decided that they would Name her Bindi Sue, which seems like a harmless, normal name that means "young girl" in Indigenous Australian dialects. Little did people know, that Steve actually named his firstborn daughter after a crocodile. Not just any crocodile, though. Steve had a favorite crocodile, and her name was also Bindi. A little nod from Steve to his daughter about his love for crocodiles, that's for sure.

9 She Memorialized Her Dad At 8 Years Old

When Bindi was just eight years old, she suffered a tragic loss as her father Steve Irwin shockingly passed away when he was attacked by a stingray while filming in 2006. At his public funeral, Bindi memorialized her father in front of hundreds in person and millions of viewers on television.

Even though Bindi was so young, she wanted to write her father’s eulogy on her own, and read it in front of everyone. That moment was incredibly emotional, and would be something that many would remember years after Steve’s death.

8 She Was Homeschooled

Bindi has a lot of knowledge about wildlife, and she owes a lot of that to her father and spending pretty much her entire life at the zoo. With such an outrageous and out of the ordinary life, Bindi didn’t attend regular school like everyone else. Instead, she was homeschooled along with her brother. She finished all of her schooling through high school, and even decided to take a few college courses. She has a certificate in business and she also has one in tourism. Homeschool really worked out for Bindi as she was constantly traveling with her parents and learning about all things wildlife.

7 She Was In Free Willy

Growing up, Bindi Irwin was surrounded by cameras, and oftentimes watched her father film his own television shows. Cameras and filming were normal for Bindi, so there’s no surprise when it came to Bindi getting comfortable in front of the camera herself. Bindi had her own nature shows, however she decided to break out onto the big screen when she started in a straight to DVD version of Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove, which is the fourth movie in the Free Willy franchise. She played Kira Cooper who tries to help a trapped baby orca.

6 She Released A Kids Fitness DVD

When Bindi was younger, she was all over the place. She was extremely marketable to kids who were interested in learning about animals, and the Irwin family took note of that. As a result, she released a fitness DVD for kids to help them get fit and have fun while doing it. Bindi, along with the Crocmen teach kids aerobics while listen to fun, upbeat themed music. Her dad Steve is also in the DVD as he cooks up healthy snacks as they teach kids how to eat right. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Irwin’s if they didn’t at least throw a few animal facts in there as well.

5 She Can Sing

By now we know that Bindi is an extremely intelligent as well as talented, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that Bindi actually dabbles in a bit of singing, too. Not only did she release her own music when she was younger, she’s also known to put on a performance at the Australian Zoo.

4 She Won Dancing With The Stars

In 2015, when Bindi was still a teenager at the time, she competed on season 21 of Dancing With The Stars. Bindi and her partner Derek Hough took home the ever so coveted mirror ball trophy for winning the competition. She tugged at the heartstrings of viewers, too, dedicating her work and dances on the show to her late father. Bindi was just 17 at the time when she appeared on the show, Bindi effortlessly took home the title, proving that she is a performer, no matter where you put her or what challenges she faces.

3 She Has Dual Citizenship

Bindi Irwin has spent most of her life growing up in Australia and currently lives there. However, even though she is Australian, she also has dual citizenship between Australia and The United States. If you think about it, it definitely makes sense. Even though she spends most of her time in Australia, The United States are also her home as her mom Terri is actually American. Therefore, Bindi is easily able to live in either country as well as work and see family in both countries as well.

2 She Met Her Husband At The Zoo

If you want to talk about adorable love stories, Bindi Irwin and her husband Chandler Powell definitely have one. In fact, Bindi and Chandler met the exact same way that her mother and father met years ago. Chandler was on vacation visiting the zoo in Australia when he met Bindi and immediately fell head over heels for her back in 2013. It was love at first sight for the two, much like Bindi’s parents. Chandler even proposed to Bindi at the zoo and the two even got married there. They’re also expecting a baby very soon, and we expect the baby to be raised around the zoo as much as possible too.

1 She Has Plans To Continue Her Dad's Legacy

The world mourned the death of Steve Irwin alongside Bindi and her family. If one thing is for certain, Bindi plans on keeping his memory alive, and keeping his legacy going strong as she follows in his footsteps. Steve wanted nothing more than to connect humans to wildlife and spread awareness about conservation, and Bindi plans to do the same. Of course, she plans to stay highly involved with the zoo, as it’s been in her family since the 1970s. Education was a huge deal for Steve, and Bindi plans to keep that legacy going.
