It is undeniable that the lives of some prominent historical figures in the country have provided the film industry with some film fodder. However, just for the sake of entertainment, biopics tend to be inaccurate and misleading in terms of feeding the information to the audience. A lot of these biopics are highly inaccurate to the extent that the people featured on the film themselves cry out for the misinformation in the film.

Sometimes these biopic films tell dishonest turn of events on the film which range from some mild changes in the actual events to an outrageous added storyline. Some biopic films just twist facts just for it to be entertaining, after all, who will watch some boring life story? It is understandable that the production staff who twist something to the story to make it more interesting. Listed below are some of the films which sacrificed accuracy and ignored the facts just so people can have their entertainment.

8 The Imitation Game

The film The Imitation Game starring English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, and Rory Kinnea follows the attempt of lonely, and eccentric mathematical genius named Alan Turing to create a machine that could help a team of the British code breakers. The team is trying to crack some SS messages during the WWII. At the time, though the leader is focused on decoding the German military secrets, Turing was focused on harboring his own little secret that he’s gay in a time when it is still a crime to be gay. Unfortunately when Turing discovered that one of their members is a spy for the Soviets, the member also found out that he is gay which were used as leverage to keep other’s secrets. While the Turing really did play a significant role during the secret code breaking for Britain, his character was not perfectly played out since he was self-absorbed than the film's depiction. Turing’s success also came from the earlier work of Polish code breakers who were not even mentioned and recognized for their hard work in the film. Although there is indeed a spy for the Soviets, he had no contact with Turing in real life and there was no blackmailing that happened during that time.

7 Jobs

Jobs is a film starring Ashton Kutcher playing as the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The film traces the early career path of Steve Jobs from his time as a Reed College dropout to becoming a CEO of one of the most prominent and profitable companies in the world, Apple. The film tends to glorify the genius mind of Jobs and overstates his role in the development of the company. While doing so, they have minimized the contributions of Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak. Wozniak cried foul at the film saying that it is highly inaccurate and specifically called out the misinformation on how the film depicted him and Jobs.

6 The Theory of Everything

The film The Theory of Everything starring English actor Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, and Charlie Cox is about the loving marriage of Stephen Hawking to Jane Wilde. The story shows how the couple had persevered through the hardships of Hawking having ALS and how he turned into an internationally celebrated physicist. The film showed how the couple’s love story started while they are both still students at the Cambridge University. They eventually got married and started their happy family soon after the ALS diagnosis of Hawking. However, as the disease progresses, Wilde was alienated from the life of the physicist. Although the film is based on the memoir of Wilde, it failed to represent the complexities of the married life of the couple. Wilde’s memoir explicitly expressed how she sacrificed her professional career in order to provide care for Hawking, however the film sidelined her ambitions and she became a character who existed solely for taking care of Hawking. The film also downplayed the relationship of Elaine Mason which resulted in the estrangement of Hawking with Wilde and their children.

5 Bonnie and Clyde

The film Bonnie and Clyde which stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway is about the eponymous 1930s outlaws. The film depicts the two as a couple who are spirited who were forced to be on the run after robbing banks. The film also added some excitement on the developing romance between the two. Their spree ended in an epic way when the law enforcers finally catch them. The duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were notorious outlaws at the time, and while the film depicted that they generally targeted large banks, they only set their sights on some small banks, gas stations and stores. The film also downplayed the fact that the couple left some trails of cadavers where in fact, they have slayed a total of 13 bodies.

4 A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind is an Oscar winning biopic which focuses on the Nobel Prize-winning economist and mathematician named John Nash played by actor Russell Crowe who is struggling with some mental illness. The film depicts how Nash charters the brilliant career of Nash while maintaining a fulfilling married life with his wife Alicia all while he is being consumed by his paranoid thoughts in the 1960s. His wife has remained faithful by his side all through his hardships. While the film is beautifully made, the actual life of John Nash was flawed. He did recover from the schizophrenia diagnosis with the loving help of his wife; however it was far more complicated than what was depicted in the film. Nash has fathered an illegitimate child with some woman and didn’t want to marry and according to his biographer he had laid his hands on his wife on at least one occasion.

3 The Hurricane

The film The Hurricane starring Denzel Washington, Vicellous Reon Shannon, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber, and John Hannah is about the real-life boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. The boxing career of Carter was derailed when he was convicted wrongfully for killing three people in 1966. He was imprisoned because of his skin color and activism. After twenty years of his sentence, a teenage fan has helped revive the interest on his case which led to the judge overturning his conviction. There were a lot of inaccuracy in the film including the depiction of Carter as a martyr when he asked his wife for a divorce to set her free, in reality; he was left by his wife because he engaged in some affairs.

2 J. Edgar

The film J. Edgar starring American actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas, and Judi Dench is about the charting of career of the controversial FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The film showed his efforts in cracking the disappearance of Lindbergh. It also delves on his private life especially on the nature of his friendship with Clyde. The biopic is highly inaccurate because of the antagonism towards some radicals which highlights the scientific methodology that he ushered into the bureau. It also ignores the most critical aspects of his career since it explored more on his romantic life. The story centered on the case of Lindbergh which overlooked the damaging activities of Hoover.

1 Grace of Monaco

The film Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman, Tim Roth, Paz Vega, Parker Posey, and Milo Ventimiglia is about the life of Grace Kelly who is a Hollywood actor turned into a European royalty. The film focuses on the life of Princess Grace during the 1960s when her marriage staggers under the weight of the affairs of her husband and also her yearning to return to acting. Grace became the savior of her country after she gave a speech about the celebration of romance to represent Monaco. The film sacrificed the historical events for the purpose of entertainment. Grace was indeed celebrated as an American princess however the film does contain a lot of historical inaccuracies which was so apparent that the children of Grace issued a statement to denounce the film. Although there were rumors of some infidelity, the film presented them as facts and the depiction of Grace as the savior of Monaco is a contrived mischaracterize of the actual events.
