Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey has been a controversial movie since it was first announced. Fans had plenty of complaints before the film even came out, from comments about the girl's outfits not being hot enough, to discussing the annoyingly long title of the film.
Since the movie released, fans couldn't help but compare the film to previously released DC movies and comment on how the movie was a "box office flop." There has been a huge debate about whether the film is actually a flop or not. One determining factor is the feedback. Birds of Prey received some mixed reviews, but all in all, according to its Rotten Tomatoes rating, it still seems like the majority enjoyed the movie.
Of course, we decided to analyze some of the worst scenes of the movie that could have caused plenty of DC fans to despise the film, but that doesn't mean we're ignoring the best parts of the movie either! Let's take a look...
15 Ruined: Cassandra Cain Shouldn't Have Left With Harley Quinn
Cassandra Cain is known to be a skilled fighter that later goes on to become Batgirl in the comic books, so the fact that she rides off with Harley Quinn at the end makes it seem like they're going a totally different route in the DCEU. Instead, we would have loved to see Cain stay with the Birds of Prey to stay true to her hero origin story!
14 Ruined: The Scene Where Harley Quinn Is "Going Soft"
Harley Quinn was way more anti-hero than villain in Birds of Prey, which is confusing for fans of the character. In the film, Harley Quinn denies that she's "going soft" after caring about Cassandra Cain, which is totally out of character for Quinn. Not every lovable villain has to become good!
13 Loved: Harley Quinn Giving Black Canary A Hair Tie
Nothing says girl power more than Harley Quinn giving Black Canary a hair tie in the middle of a fight scene. This is one scene that truly shows the struggles real female superheroes would go through in a battle, which is why fans absolutely loved it.
12 Ruined: The Random Musical Sequence
Random musical sequences are suddenly a thing in plenty of movies and shows, but for this film, we're not entirely sure it's necessary. While we do love the nod to Marilyn Monroe, this scene took us totally off-guard. This is an action movie, not Riverdale. We just can't get on board.
11 Ruined: The Villain Was Totally Forgettable
As much as we love Ewan McGregor, we have to admit that his character could have done more. He looked super intimidating as the Black Mask and showed off an amazing sense of style, but that's about all he did. His henchmen have way more action in the film, so we really expected more from a "big bad" villain.
10 Loved: The Romance Between Harley Quinn And A Sandwich
Harley Quinn's romantic scene with her bacon, egg, and cheese is certainly debatable, but it's safe to say the majority of fans can agree it's hilarious and relatable. It's a huge relief that this was the only romance in the movie and just goes to show not every movie about women needs a love story.
9 Ruined: The Moment We Realize Cassandra Cain Was A Thief
Ella Jay Basco played an amazing Cassandra Cain, but if there's one thing that threw us totally off guard, it was her origin story. In the comics, Cassandra Cain is nowhere near a thief - and honestly, the movie would have gone the same if they had Basco portray a different character instead!
8 Ruined: There Was No Reason For The R-Rating
The R-Rating for Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey could have certainly hurt the film by preventing families from being able to watch it. Not only that, but the rating was super unnecessary. They could have easily cut out the cussing and kept this film PG-13. It would have appealed to a large crowd.
7 Loved: The Women Were As Strong As The Men
There were absolutely no damsels in distress in Birds of Prey, and that's something that we loved about the film. Even Cassandra Cain, who everyone was trying to protect, suited up with the rest of the girls and kicked some butt. Each girl was able to hold their own against the Black Mask's goons and didn't need help.
6 Ruined: The Final Fight Scene Was Lacking
We're not going to go as far as to say that 5 girls taking on hoards of men was unrealistic (John Wick is one man and he did it), but we definitely could have got more from the fight in Quinn's funhouse. We would have loved to see more usage of traps and tricks from Quinn, because this fight scene was built up so much, and fell flat.
5 Ruined: The Huntress' Attempts To Be Funny
Huntress has the darkest backstory in the film, but the movie turned her into a joke. Instead of being intimidating and scary (as she should have been), she came off as socially awkward with cringeworthy attempts at being funny. Harley Quinn was already the comedic relief, we would have loved to see a more serious Huntress.
4 Loved: Harley Quinn's Break-Up With The Joker
If there's one thing we loved about Birds of Prey, it was watching Harley Quinn move on from The Joker and realize that she can make a name for herself without him. Her character is way better without him in the picture, and we loved to see her glow up from Suicide Squad.
3 Ruined: Their Costumes Made The Characters Unrecognizable
We can't deny the girls of Birds of Prey look super fierce, but their outfits make it impossible to tell who their comic book counterparts are supposed to be, other than Harley Quinn. Dinah Lance resembles Hawkgirl way more than Black Canary, but hopefully next time we'll see them in more accurate outfits.
2 Ruined: That Weird Lady And The Tramp Scene With The Hyena
Harley Quinn's hyenas were a cool nod to the comics since any comic book fan would know Harley loves to run with her favorite pets. Although, that one Lady and the Tramp inspired scene in which she shares a Twizzler with the animal was totally uncalled for and pretty weird!
1 Loved: Harley Quinn's Roller Skating Fight Scene
Birds of Prey was full of cool fighting choreography, but one of the best scenes was when Harley Quinn held on to a rope tied to Huntress's motorcycle and chased down Black Mask's henchmen. Seeing her hop from car to car was not only satisfying to watch but also super cool.
