Shortly after bursting onto the world stage in 2008, Lady Gaga proved her immense talent as a vocalist, songwriter, and live performer. But since establishing herself as a superstar, the New York-born artist has also proven that she has serious acting chops, taking roles in several major projects including American Horror Story and House of Gucci.

In 2018, Gaga starred opposite Bradley Cooper in the newest remake of A Star Is Born. The two are said to have developed a very close bond behind the scenes while working together, made even stronger by the fact that Cooper was directing Gaga as well as acting with her.

But there was one scene that the actors filmed together that left Gaga “devastated.” Though the two co-stars are friends in real life, Cooper hurt Gaga’s feelings with a single comment.

How Bradley Cooper Hurt Lady Gaga’s Feelings

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga spoke highly of each other after they worked together on A Star Is Born, which Cooper also directed. In the film, Cooper portrayed the role of Jackson Maine, a washed-up country singer with alcohol addiction. Gaga played Ally, a singer-songwriter who is discovered and turned into a star by Jackson.

Even though the two stars got on well in real life, Cooper has since revealed that he “devastated” Gaga by hurting her feelings during filming. The scene in question takes place when Jackson and Ally get into an argument while Ally is in the bath.

In the scene, Jackson calls Ally “ugly,” which wasn’t in the script. Though it didn’t appear in the script in this scene, Ally opens up to Jackson earlier in the film about this being an insecurity of hers.

According to Nylon, the devastated look on Ally’s face when Jackson calls her ugly is real; Gaga really was hurt to hear that comment.

Cooper confirmed that he wasn’t trying to get a strong reaction out of Gaga — he just felt that Jackson really would say that to Ally to try and hurt her feelings.

"I remember we had done two takes and I felt very good about the scene, but, like most of the days, I just felt like we have to mine everything possible, so we just did one more,” Cooper explained in an interview (via Nylon).

"That wasn’t an actor trying to get something out of another actor,” he went on. “That was two characters.”

Cooper then added, “What Jackson does to her in that moment is go to the most vulnerable place. That’s what she shared with him early on at the cop bar (that she felt ugly), so it’s to story."

Nylon also reports that Gaga confirmed she could relate to Ally’s insecurity over comments about her appearance. However, Cooper clarified that the comment didn’t feel like a “violation” to Gaga because the two were so close and felt “safe together acting.”

Were Bradley Cooper And Lady Gaga In A Relationship?

Given the undeniable chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga (it’s hard to believe there was another superstar in the running to play Ally!), as well as the praise they’ve shared about each other in the media, fans have wondered whether the two actually dated for real behind the scenes.

The rumors were fueled further when the two performed together at the Academy Awards in 2019. The performance was of the song Shallow, which was performed as a duet by both actors in the film.

According to Us Weekly, Cooper has finally put the rumors to rest, confirming that there was never anything romantic between him and Gaga. He explained that the steamy chemistry they appeared to share on stage at the Oscars was simply an act to entertain the crowd and capture the feelings of their characters.

“They kind of fall in love in that scene in the film. It’s that explosive moment that happens to happen to them on a stage in front of thousands of people,” Cooper explained in an interview (via Us Weekly). “It would have been so weird if we were both on stools facing the audience.”

What Did Bradley Cooper Say About Lady Gaga?

So the relationship between Gaga and Cooper is purely platonic, but the two have still been known to gush about one another from time to time.

“She’s just so terribly charismatic and beautiful,” Cooper revealed in an interview (via Decider). “When I met her, I thought, ‘If I can just harness that … then it’s just for me to mess up.’”

He went on, “But then, when we started working together, I realized, ‘Oh, oh, the sky’s the limit in terms of what she’s able to do and her commitment level.'”
