Fraser Underwent Multiple Surgeries Behind The Scenes

At the moment, it all felt okay. Brendan Fraser was riding high, working project after project during the late '90s and into the early 2000s. However, by the time the third Mummy film came around, the actor started to feel some burnout.

Not only that, but he was in rough shape physically, from all the stunts he had been working years prior. According to Fraser (in an interview with GQ), it hurt his career in a major way.

“I believe I probably was trying too hard, in a way that's destructive.''

“By the time I did the third Mummy picture in China,” which was 2008, “I was put together with tape and ice—just, like, really nerdy and fetishy about ice packs. Screw-cap ice packs and downhill-mountain-biking pads, 'cause they're small and light and they can fit under your clothes. I was building an exoskeleton for myself daily.”

Eventually, the injuries started piling up and that meant lots of surgery work to get various strains repaired, “I needed a laminectomy. And the lumbar didn't take, so they had to do it again a year later.”

Fraser compared his injuries to those of a wounded horse that would just keep marching on despite all the difficulties. As it turns out, he was facing other serious issues as well.

Brendan Fraser Was A Victim Of Assault

The problems would continue to pile up off-screen for Fraser. This, however, was of a different variety way back in 2003. It all took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel, during a party set up by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Things took an inappropriate twist, when Philip Berk, the president of HFPA, touched Fraser in a disturbing manner, violating his personal space and placing his hands on Fraser's buttocks.

Fraser felt empowered to release his own story, given all the strength his peers were showing around him.

“I know Rose [McGowan], I know Ashley [Judd], I know Mira [Sorvino]—I've worked with them. I call them friends in my mind. I haven't spoken to them in years, but they're my friends. I watched this wonderful movement, these people with the courage to say what I didn't have the courage to say.”

Without a doubt, the moment alleviated a lot of pain from the past and fans would be happy to know that he's set on making a comeback, starting with a huge film that features some of Hollywood's finest.

Fraser Is Making A Career Comeback

Not only is Fraser making a comeback but fans couldn't be happier. Fraser got all choked up when a fan discussed how happy he was that the actor was set to return, “The internet is so behind you! We’re so supportive,” a fan said to Fraser.

“There are so many people out there who love you, and we’re rooting for you, and we can’t wait to see what you do next.”

Fraser had to take a second and regroup following the statement, as it clearly got to him.

While Brendan Fraser's surgeries and various health issues are now in the past, he did put his body through a lot while preparing for The Whale. Hello! reported that Brendan seemed to make a massive transformation to portray a 600-pound character.

But fans need not be alarmed; Brendan wore prosthetics for the film, and did a standup job, by all critical accounts. He looked unrecognizable compared to his Mummy days, but Brendan is in a good place now — and fans can breathe easy.
