Brie Larson Discusses Playing Carol Denvers In ‘Captain Marvel’

Larson has revealed that she struggled with her own image following the Captain Marvel press tour in 2019.

“I was starting to feel like my own image of myself was oppressive,” Larson told The New York Times.

“There’s something very different about being shown to the world as a superhero,” she continued, explaining that playing Carol Danvers on screen came with pressure “to uphold a certain image.”

Larson plays Captain Marvel, the superhero identity of former US Air Force fighter pilot Carol Danvers, in the movie directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. She will don Danvers’ suit again in a sequel set to be released in November 2022.

Larson also explained why she scrapped most projects she was developing pre-pandemic, minus her YouTube channel.

"I love that my job is like holding up a mirror to society, and society changed, so it meant I needed to start over again,” she said.
