The much-anticipated Britney Spears documentary finally aired last night.

Framing Britney Spears explored the dark side of the singer's fame, from her rise as a childhood star to her 2007 breakdown.

Social media praised the documentary for exploring her father's controversial 13-year conservatorship, which launched the #FreeBritney movement.

The Grammy-winning singer has been in a acrimonious battle with dad Jamie over who should control her life. Britney, 39, wants to remove her father as her conservator.

The new film, was directed by Samantha Stark and produced by The New York Times.

It appeared on Hulu this Friday before being televised on FX.

After Britney suffered her breakdown in 2007, she lost custody of her two sons and was placed in the conservatorship of Jamie and a lawyer called Andrew Wallet.

An interviewee in the documentary, Jive Records marketing executive Kim Kaiman, claimed that Britney's father had nothing to do with her upbringing and career.

"The only thing Jamie ever said to me was: 'My daughter is going to be so rich she’s going to buy me a boat.' That’s all I’m gonna say about Jamie," said Kim.

Kaiman stated in the documentary that it was Britney's mother Lynn who "supported' her during her rise to fame.

Britney was only 16 years old when in 1998 her "...Baby One More Time" catapulted her to global pop superstardom.

Meanwhile Jamie was battling various personal problems - drinking, a failed gym business and a file for bankruptcy.

But that eventful night when she hospitalized - after allegedly barring herself in a room with her children - everything changed.

After failing to give them over to ex-husband Kevin as directed, the "Sometimes" singer lost visitation rights to her children.

Her dad Jamie soon obtained the temporary conservatorship that became permanent.

Britney fans are reeling from the documentary and are pleased that the "truth is finally out."

"The conservatorship is ridiculous! Her money should be hers to pass on to her children," one fan wrote.

"How can a multimillionaire mega star performing gruelling dance and singing schedules be judged to be so incapable she cannot even decide how to spend a cent of her money? Her dad is a monster!" another added.

"There's no way you can watch this and finish it still thinking this conservatorship is appropriate for her. It is SO obvious that it exists because they just can't let go of her money. Openly admitting and telling the court to view the conservatorship as a "hybrid business model"??? That is absolutely disturbing and disgraceful!" a third chimed in.

"I had no idea Britney's dad wasn't really around for her upbringing! Why should he have so much control now?" a fourth chimed in.
