Britney Spears continues to be in the spotlight after winning back her freedom from a 13-year conservatorship. Amid rumors of potential comeback projects and recent life revelations by the pop star, some can't help but think that the "Toxic" singer had some work done on her face. Others even speculate that Spears had plastic surgery when everyone was focused on either her trial or bizarre Instagram videos.

Unlike her "rival" Christina Aguilera who's had visible alterations on her face (e.g. her plumper lips), Spears' "work" is said to be minimal but "obvious enough" to know it's there. But did she actually get anything done or did her face naturally develop through the years? According to fans and experts, the singer is guilty of going under the knife. Here's why.

Updated on August 25, 2022: Earlier this year, Britney Spears opened up about her thoughts regarding plastic surgery not only for herself, but as a whole. She shared that she certainly considered different procedures as a result of heavy body-shaming from her father during her conservatorship. Her final thoughts, however, are that happiness is what is most attractive and that regardless of how she looks, getting work done should be a last resort.

The Start Of Britney's Plastic Surgery Rumors

In a 2013 interview with InStyle, Spears admitted to having slight cosmetic work done on her face. "A doctor I see, [Beverly Hills plastic surgeon] Dr. [Raj] Kanodia, does fun stuff to me sometimes—I’ve had lip injections before," she said. In 2014, the singer appeared on the cover of Women's Health and fans immediately pointed out that she had something done on her face. A fan tweeted: "Britney Spears got plastic surgery and just looks awful. She should have stayed au natural."

Some didn't even recognize her at first. "How much plastic surgery has Britney Spears had!?" another netizen tweeted. "Literally didn't recognize her. Disappointing." Dr. Anthony Youn told Radar Online that "it appears that Britney said, 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' to her plastic surgeon." Despite not having treated the singer, Youn pointed out the cosmetic procedures Spears may have gotten. "Her cheeks look quite plump, possibly due to injections of a filler like Voluma," he said. "Another possible cause could be an allergic reaction to a medication or food, or major weight gain."

The plastic surgeon even made recommendations for the "Gimme More" singer who was just 32 at that time. "If she's had actual filler injections, hopefully she had them recently and is still swollen," said Youn. "Britney usually looks really good, and as a board-certified plastic surgeon I would recommend clean living to her over any actual fillers, given as young as she is." Dr. Norman Rowe echoed the same thoughts on Spears' new look. "It appears that Britney has had fillers placed in her cheeks to provide a lift," he explained. "And her forehead looks like Botox has been at work to smooth out any wrinkles."

Others also called out the singer for having "photoshopped" abs in her Women's Health cover. "Is it down to excessive photoshopping? Too much contouring? We just don't know," Buzzfeed famously wrote during the controversy. A behind-the-scenes video from the photoshoot proved that Spears' abs weren't edited at all. The "Womanizer" singer's interview with the magazine may have also given an explanation for the mystery.

"Daily exercise is important for me both mentally and physically," she said. "I don't mind working out. Trainers keep you motivated, but I didn't have a problem being motivated." As for her unrecognizable face, insiders told TMZ that it was all heavy contour, not surgery or digital retouching.

What Do Experts Say About Britney Spears' 'Plastic Surgery Journey'?

To this day, many fans believe that Spears' current look is all plastic; they just think it's not as overdone as most celebrities. In October 2021, Dr. Youn posted a YouTube video where he traced the singer's "plastic surgery journey." He started off by revealing that at 18, the "Circus" singer had already undergone breast augmentation. He added that Spears' mom Lynn Spears confirmed it herself, saying it was something "stars of her age should have done." Then in 2002 at the age of 21, the singer looked like she had a "quite subtle" rhinoplasty.

Youn noted that it was around 2012, at the age of 31, Spears started to get Botox and filler. "She may have had some Botox in her glabella to smooth any frown lines," he said. "It's also possible that she may have had some injections of filler into her cheeks and into her lips. She's had some injections at this time. They're pretty subtle. So if she's having anything done, it's not super clear yet."

But the plastic surgeon agreed that from 2014 to 2015, Spears' face really had major changes. "Her lips do look a bit plumped," Youn said of a red carpet photo from that year. "They do have that characteristic kind of pouty look that we often see with people who have lip injections of filler. Also, her cheeks look a bit fuller and that could be due to injections of a filler in her cheeks as well." Youn added that until recently, it appears that the singer's look has been consistent with her breast implant removal in 2012, a second nose job in 2019, and some Botox/filler injections.
