Brooke Nevils is a former NBC News employee whose horrendous allegation against Matt Lauer went public for the first time a couple of years ago. Her complaint was actually the catalyst that managed Lauer getting fired from the anchors' desk on The Today Show back in 2017.

Matt Lauer has told fans he'd return to TV. After all, he's still worth plenty of cash. Nevertheless, his bad actions have closed many doors for him.

Accused of Sexual Harassment

Brooke Nevils sat down with Ronan Farrow for his new book Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators. In the book, Brooke alleges Lauer raped her in his hotel room at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

According to her account, Brooke had been drinking heavily and went back to his room twice: once to retrieve her press credentials which she says Lauer had taken as a joke, and a second time after he invited her back because, as Farrow writes, she "had no reason to suspect Lauer would be anything but friendly based on prior experience."

The Night of the Incident

Once she was in his hotel room, Brooke alleges Lauer, who was only wearing a t-shirt and boxers, "pushed her against the door and kissed her. He then pushed her onto the bed, flipping her over, asking if she liked anal sex."

Although Brooke declined several times, Lauer didn't stop. The book describes how this incident was extremely painful for her and none consensual after a long night of drinking.

Matt Lauer Denied the Rape Allegation

Lauer denied the accusations with a letter to Variety, writing, "I had an extramarital affair with Brooke Nevils in 2014. It began when she came to my hotel room very late one night in Sochi, Russia. We engaged in a variety of sexual acts... Each act was mutual and completely consensual." He went on to say, "The story Brooke tells is filled with false details intended only to create the impression this was an abusive encounter. Nothing could be further from the truth. There was absolutely nothing aggressive about that encounter."

After the 2014 Russian Olympics incident, Brooke told the author Ronan Farrow that she continued her link with Lauer describing it as "completely transactional, not a relationship."

Brooke's Colleagues Reaction

NBC host Savannah Guthrie, and her co-star Hoda Kotb, put out a statement on TV. Guthrie said, "This is shocking and appalling. I honestly don't even know what to say about it. I want to say I know it wasn't easy for our colleague Brooke to come forward then, it's not easy now, and we support her and any women who have come forward with claims. And it's just very painful for all of us at NBC and who are at the Today show. It's very, very, very difficult."

Kotb agreed and said, "They're not allegations of an affair; they're allegations of a crime... Our thoughts are with Brooke. It's no easy what she did to come forward."

Brooke told Farrow she had more sexual encounters with Lauer, saying she was terrified about the control he had over her career. "Sources close to Lauer emphasized that she sometimes initiated contact," Farrow writes.

Getting support from Meredith Vieira

Brooke, who had been working for former Today's co-anchor Meredith Vieira at the Olympics in Sochi, eventually told Vieira in 2017, several years after the incident, what had happened, according to the book. Vieira urged her to go to NBCUniversal human resources department with a lawyer, which she did.

The day after that meeting, Lauer was terminated by NBC for inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. Though Brooke had not wanted money, Farrow writes that she went on medical leave in 2018 and was eventually paid seven figures by NBC.

Matt Lauer's Social Media Comeback

The former Today Show anchor is making his return to the public eye on social media. Matt Lauer uploaded a video lip-syncing on his daughter Romy's TikTok page. The duo teamed up for a series of videos for the social media app, each one featuring a seemingly playful and light-hearted Lauer.

In one of the videos, Lauer and Romy are dancing to Chance the Rapper's Hot Shower. They also performed their own rendition of Big Fun from Heathers: The Musical. Lauer's videos got mixed reactions, with one member commenting, "Hmmmm, Matt, that's where he ended up. I was wondering what happened after The Today Show. Now I know."

Keeping a Low Profile

Lauer has been keeping a low profile since being fired from The Today Show in late 2017 over accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

He was last spotted in August of 2019 supporting his daughter at The Hampton Classic Horse Show alongside his now ex-wife Annette Roque. The pair finalized their divorce in September of that year, with Lauer agreeing to pay about 20 million dollars in their settlement.

A source previously told Entertainment Tonight, "Finally decided it was time to finalize everything and move forward and focus on the kids. He has a lot of guilt about how things went down, and he wants to make sure Annette is taken care of."

The two, who married in October of 1998, share three kids: 20-year-old son Jack, 17-year-old daughter Romy, and 14-year-old son Thijs.

Fans are worried that Lauer keeps sexually assaulting other women. Nevertheless, Brooke's allegations have become a warning sign for other potential victims to keep away from him.
