Whenever a celebrity loses weight, fans get talking. While some fans become extremely supportive of a celebrity's journey to getting into better shape and living a healthier lifestyle, others criticize. Often, they become so fixated on how much a celebrity loses and claim they did so for unhealthy reasons. In the case of the late Chadwick Boseman, fans criticized him for looking gaunt without figuring out that he was actually extremely sick. And with Modern Family's Sarah Hyland, everyone believed she was dealing with an eating disorder. In short, people are just straight-up jerks who can't mind their own business. This is almost definitely the case with Adele's weight loss journey.

While Adele started out her incredible music career as a curvier woman, she has since become a slender thing. Some fans wonder if her voice has changed because of her weight loss, while others think she has lost too much weight. In short, Adele was slammed from every corner of the internet after she proudly displayed her dramatic weight loss on Instagram. While the battle to adopt a healthier eating regime and workout schedule should be commended, the real reason why Adele decided to lose weight is a little depressing...

Online Bullies Targeted Adele From Every Angle After Her Incredible Weight Loss

There's no doubt that fans went wild when Adele returned to Instagram after an absence and posted a photo that displayed her dramatic weight loss. Some say it was around 100 pounds while others say 40... Either way, it was a noticeable difference. Initially, fans were absolute gobsmacked. After all, she looked like an entirely different woman. She was still Adele, but a much fitter Adele. Not frighteningly skinny, but certainly not what she once was. Even still, other fans started to say that she was "too skinny". Other fans started going after Adele for not being a "role model" to young women who are struggling with their weight. Essentially, they were arguing that Adele needed to still be 40 pounds heavier in order to be a role model... This, of course, is utterly ridiculous. The mere fact that she worked her butt off to have a healthier lifestyle is precisely what a "role model" should do. More importantly, it's what Adele felt she needed to do for her own health and sanity. At least, that's what her die-hard fans said in response to all of these internet trolls.

The truth is, the online bullying surrounding Adele's weight loss has come at her from all angles. Either she's "too skinny" and "unhealthy" or she has "betrayed" her younger, curvier fans and basically told them that they aren't good enough anymore. Even those who claim they are trying to be "supportive" of Adele's weight loss have a negative spin on things...

One Twitter user even wrote, "RE Adele’s weight loss. She looks incredible, obviously. But why the obsession? She was both beautiful and talented before she was slim. I am thrilled for her having the motivation to do this and I hope it was entirely driven by what SHE wanted and not media pressure."

Even within this praise is a criticism about the truth behind her weight loss. But the truth is, only Adele knows why she wanted to lose weight. And it's entirely her business.

The Real Reason Why Adele Lost So Much Weight Was Because Of An Obsession With Exercise

After all the online bullying, it made sense that The Independent would ask Adele why she lost weight in the first place. As it turns out, Adele didn't actually even want to lose weight. The real reason she ended up losing weight is that she used exercise to manage her anxiety... which, as any phycologist or psychiatrist worth their salt would say, is an extremely healthy way to deal with a problem.

"It was because of my anxiety. Working out, I would just feel better. It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone," Adele told The Independent in October 2021.

Unfortunately, Adele took things a little too far as she claims she became "obsessed" with exercise because it was so effective at getting rid of her anxiety. But clearly, it became a substitution for other issues surrounding her anxiety.

Still, Adele claims she's proud of her weight loss and that she really doesn't care about the online bullying. Everyone can have the opinions that they want to have. She lost weight for her. She did it not to look better or tell curvier women that their bodies weren't good. She did it to manage her own anxiety. And the results have made her feel better in her own skin and made her a healthier and happier person. Can't we celebrate that?
