Zoo In Egypt Accused Of Painting Their Donkeys To Turn Them Into Zebras

A zoo in Egypt has been accused of painting black stripes on donkeys and attempting to pass them off as zebras.

Society seems very split on the mere existence of zoos in the present day and that is understandable. When zoos first came about they were simply so that people could see animals from all over the world and for the most part, the conditions they were kept in didn't mean much at all. While the novelty of seeing animals from a variety of countries still exists today, 21st-century zoos are more about protection and preservation.

There are some zoos that are better than others, naturally, and the Cairo International Garden municipal park is currently being accused of falling into the "others" category. A photo taken by a student visiting the zoo in Egypt has recently gone viral because of a very peculiar accusation. The photo is of a zebra and it looks suspiciously like the animal is merely a donkey with black stripes painted on it.

The photo above, taken by student Mahmoud Sarhan, seems like pretty damning evidence to us, especially when compared to the picture of the zebras below. Nogoum FM, a local radio station in Cairo, contacted the zoo for comment and it replied, denying categorically that its zebras are not the real deal. A vet, contacted by Extranews.tv on the other hand, was not convinced.

The animal in the picture is apparently much smaller than a zebra should be, and also has pointy ears that one would normally find on a donkey. On top of that, zebras' snouts are usually black and their stripes are much more consistent and parallel. Plus the detail that everyone who has seen this photo likely noticed before anything else, the stripes on the animal's face are quite clearly smudged.

Shockingly, if it does turn out that these zebras in Cairo are not the real deal, it won't be the first time that a zoo has tried to fool people in this way. A zoo in Henan province once tried to pass a Tibetan mastiff dog off as an African lion, another zoo in China thought people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between real penguins and inflatable ones, and a zoo in Gaza was guilty of painting donkeys to look like zebras much like the one in Egypt has been accused of.
