During Cameron Diaz's hiatus from acting, she occasionally spoke to members of the press. When Diaz was interviewed by Cosmopolitan in 2015, she spoke about what she learned from her past failed relationships.

"You have to find someone in the same place as you are. Timing is everything. If you get into a relationship where you want something the guy doesn't want, it's never gonna work. You're never going to get him to be in that place."

"No matter how old you are, finding the guy who's in the same place as you are and wants to show up is the only way a relationship works, period."

"Here's the thing: You make the same mistake over and over again until you learn your lesson. We girls sometimes do the thing where we pick the same person over and over again—they look and seem different, but deep down, they're the same. And that's on us."

On another occasion, Cameron Diaz took part in a Goop Wellness Summit in 2017. While speaking with Gwyneth Paltrow, Diaz revealed that her Hollywood job left her with an identity crisis.

"I just went, 'I can't really say who I am to myself.' Which is a hard thing to face up to. I felt the need to make myself whole."

Later in the conversation, Gwyneth Paltrow asked Cameron Diaz why she never got married before she met Joel Madden. Diaz's response explained everything anyone should need to understand why her relationship with Madden works and makes a lot of sense.

"I think it's a matter of I just hadn't met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there's a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends,"

"And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people! We are so different from one another, but we share the same values—we're totally two peas in a pod. We are both just weird enough for each other."

"We women are objectified so much. Somehow my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it's like not to have that be a part of a relationship, and being an equal."

"I never experienced that before. I'd never been loved in that way. I look at him every day and he inspires me—he works so hard. I feel so lucky."
