Cary Elwes is a veteran actor whose Hollywood career spans decades. Early on, he became known for movies such as The Princess Bride, Dracula (alongside action star Keanu Reeves), Twister, Liar Liar, and The Informant. Later on, Elwes also became a recurring presence on The X-Files and several years later, the actor also joined the cast of the drama-comedy Psych for a guest role.

In recent years, the Psych cast has enjoyed a reunion of sorts with the release of Psych: The Movie and Psych 2: Lassie Come Home. Unfortunately for fans, Elwes didn’t reprise his role as Pierre Despereaux and this led some to wonder if the actor had enjoyed working on the series in the first place.

Here’s What The Psych Cast And Crew Have Said About Working With Cary Elwes

Elwes’ character was introduced on Psych during the show’s fourth season. Since then, the show’s creator, Steve Franks, couldn’t stop writing the character into some of the episodes. “I love writing the Despereaux character (played by Cary Elwes, who is back in the 'Indiana Shawn' episode) and I say if I could just do Despereaux episodes I would do that,” Franks said while speaking with The Futon Critic. “They're so fun but this is what we've been building to do with that character because we didn't really get to see him in action in the first one. They were always catching him after the fact.”

Meanwhile, series stars James Roday and Dulé Hill also remarked that the cast had a good time with Elwes on set. “We had a lot of fund [sic] with Cary,” Roday said while speaking with Are You Screening? “I think we had more fun with him the second time than we did even the first time because he, you know, he was sort of comfortable in the skin of the character. And he sort of got of better idea of what our set is and that it was going to be all fun and games all the time.”

While working on the show, Rodjay also revealed that Elwes even brought his family onto the set so they got to meet his wife, actress Lisa Marie Kubikoff, and daughter Dominique. Rodjay also referred to the veteran actor as “all-around good guy and very funny in the episode.”

As for Elwes himself, it seems he also had nothing but good memories of his time on the show. During a Reddit AMA discussion, the actor recalled, “In every episode as Despereaux, I got to do fun things, like scale a skyscraper, drive a high-powered speedboat, fly a plane, etcetera.” He also added, “Loads of fun things to do. We just laughed everyday.” It’s just too bad that Elwes couldn’t join them for an onscreen reunion years later.

So Why Didn’t He Join the Psych Reunion?

It seems that Elwes absence from the Psych movies have more to do with schedule conflicts than anything else. After all, the actor had been taking on several projects on tv, film, and streaming since the show ended. That said, it’s worth noting that it was Elwes that spilled the beans about the Psych reunion early on. It all happened while the actor was attending Indiana Comic-Con. The Herald Bulletin even revealed that Elwes himself declared, “We’re all reuniting in July to make some organized chaos.”

Franks himself knew about Elwes early announcement and when it turned out that the actor couldn’t join them, he just became amused with the irony of the situation. “Yet, we couldn’t make it work with Cary of all people!” Franks remarked while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “[This] feels very Psych-like. The one person you think would be in it, he’s not in this one.” Meanwhile, Roday, who also wrote the film, told Vulture, “Also, once the story took shape, and especially after we were thrown the curveball with Tim, I’m not sure there was enough real estate to properly integrate Despereaux this time around.”

Later on, Elwes was also tapped to join the cast for Psych 2. Once again, however, the actor’s own schedule made it impossible for him to take part in the production. “I’m sad to disappoint, but I’m not,” Elwes confirmed while speaking with Vulture. “I was busy shooting something else. It was a pity, but there you go.”

Here’s What He’s Been Up To Since Psych

Since starring on Psych, Elwes has been busier than anyone could imagine. For starters, he has starred in several films, including Billionaire Boys Club, Don’t Sleep, Sugar Mountain, and Indiscretion. At the same time, Elwes also picked up several episodic projects, including Stranger Things on Netflix and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime Video.

Today, Elwes also has several films in the works, including the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible 7 and an untitled Guy Ritchie film. In recent years, there has also been talk of doing a remake of The Princess Bride, although Elwes has already signaled that he is not interested in becoming involved with the project. It seems this actor is simply not into remakes. After all, he has a “theory.” “I think if a film has a great idea but it’s poorly executed then it has a right to be remade,” Elwes explained. “But I think films that were pretty cool should be left alone.”
