Warner Bros. turns its attention towards the caped crusader as it prepares to release The Batman, the latest film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This time, Twilight star Robert Pattinson takes on the role of the Dark Knight while veteran actress Zoë Kravitz suits up as the latest Catwoman.

Having been a part of the massively successful Harry Potter movie universe, Kravitz is certainly used to dealing with fantasy films. Nonetheless, joining the DCEU and playing an iconic role felt “different.”

Zoë Kravitz Was Cast Amidst Concerns Of Scheduling Conflict

When Ben Affleck exited the project and Matt Reeves took over as director, several actresses were considered for the role initially. Aside from Kravitz, they also reportedly considered Eiza Gonzalez, Alicia Vikander, and Zazie Beetz. Now, Kravitz may have wanted to book the part from the beginning. But just the same, she was determined to make sure that the project would be right for her.

“The thing that I tried to keep in check throughout, though, was just wanting to be agreeable and likeable to get the role,” the actress explained during an interview with AnOther. “It was important to give him an idea of what it’s really like to work with me. To say what I really think and, if we’re on set together, to ask the questions I want to ask.” For Kravitz, she believes that this approach essentially her the part. “We had some really good conversations,” she recalled. “I had some thoughts about the character once I’d read the script too and they were welcomed.” According to reports, Reeves chose to cast Kravitz despite concerns that they may have to deal with scheduling conflicts due to Fantastic Beasts (production on The Batman eventually experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

She just gave me a big hug and said, ‘You’re going to be great.’” She also added, “Both Halle [Berry] and Anne [Hathaway] were really sweet on Instagram and Twitter. [They] sent really sweet, encouraging messages when that was announced.

Here’s Why Playing Catwoman Felt ‘Different’

When Kravitz agreed to play Catwoman, she was keenly aware of the role’s iconic status and massive fanbase. The realization came when her casting was announced. “I was excited when I got the role, and usually when you get a job the people who are excited about it are you, your parents, your agent, your friends and that’s kind of it,” she told Variety in another interview. “But when the press release came, I got more text messages and calls than I’ve gotten on my birthday, on my wedding day.”

Despite acting for years, this was something she’s never dealt with before. “It was different,” she remarked. “It was unexpected for me. And that was what was exciting.” Admittedly, Kravitz confessed that she also found the role to be “a little scary.” But that is essentially a good thing. “I feel it pushes me to a better place anyway, so I welcome the nerves,” she explained. “Of course, I want to honor the fans and hope they like what I do with the role, but in order to do what I think I need to do with Catwoman I have to go internal and forget about the rest of the world.”

For Kravitz, internalizing the role meant pushing herself physically. “To spend a year of your life, and it’s very physically demanding ... I had to be in very specific shape, and there’s a pandemic going on,” she explained. “I’m being zipped into a catsuit every day at 7 am, working 12-hour days and then coming home and working out. It was intense.”

Here’s What Fans Can Expect From Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman

Unlike in previous Batman films, fans can expect to see Kravitz’s Selina Kyle prior to becoming the iconic DC character. While speaking with AV Club, Reeves confirmed that when fans first see Kravitz, “Selina isn’t Catwoman yet.” He added, “That’s actually part of the journey.” For the record, Reeves also told Indie Wire that he “wanted to do not an origin tale, but a tale that would still acknowledge his [Batman] origins, in that it formed who he is.”

At the moment, there aren’t many details available regarding the film. That said, Reeves has nothing but praise for Kravitz for her portrayal of Catwoman. For the director, Kravitz's take on the character is new but also iconic. “Her iteration of Selina Kyle, like to me, that’s incredibly exciting,” Reeves remarked. “You have an iteration that you’ve never seen of what she’s doing, but it touches on all these kind of iconic sort of things that people know from the comics.” Similarly, Pattinson has remained rather tight-lipped about the film. “Me and Zoë did some stuff,” the actor hinted while speaking with Variety. “There are lots of little surprises for it.”

Reeve’s The Batman is slated for release on March 4, 2022.
