The two started talking and immediately hit it off. They went on a date after the party, and soon became the ultimate Hollywood couple.

12 Cindy Gave Richard A Marriage Ultimatum

By 1991, Cindy was itching to take their relationship further. Like many other girls, Cindy often dreamt of getting married and having the wedding of her dreams. Since the two had been together for a few years, she gave Richard an ultimatum — I want to get married, let’s do it. Ultimately, Richard did give in to her demands.

11 They Got Married In Vegas

Once Richard gave in to Cindy’s demands to get married, they decided to do so on a whim. On December 12, 1991, Richard had a free night from filming, when the two boarded a private jet to Las Vegas along with some of their closest friends. They went to The Church of the West, which was also the same chapel that Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton married.

10 They Used Foil Wedding Rings

The whole ordeal to just get up and get married one night was so last minute and out of the blue that there was a lot missing from their wedding. Not only did Cindy not walk down the aisle in a wedding dress, but they also didn’t have time to get actual wedding rings. Instead, they exchanged rings that were made out of aluminum foil.

9 They Were The "It" Couple

When Cindy and Richard started dating, the two of them were at the height of their careers. Cindy is a model, and back in the late 80s, you could find her on almost every magazine and walking in almost every fashion show. Richard was at the top of his acting career, starring in American Gigolo and Pretty Woman. When they got together they quickly became Hollywood’s new ”it” couple.

8 There Were Rumors They Were Both Gay

Like any other couple in Hollywood, there were constant rumors surrounding Cindy and Richard. Perhaps the most insane rumor about them? Both of them were gay and the whole reason they got married was to cover it up. The rumors got worse when Cindy modeled alongside K.D Lang, a lesbian that was very much out, and Richard took on a role in the movie, And The Band Played On, about the AIDS epidemic in the US.

7 They Bought An Ad To Prove They Weren't Gay

When Cindy and Richard heard the swirling rumors about them being gay and married as a cover-up, they decided to take matters into their own hands to prove those rumors false. In 1994, they paid for a full-page ad in The London Times, stating that they were married simply because they were in love and not for the reasons people thought.

6 They Never Had Kids

When the two got together, Cindy was very young, just 22 years old, much younger than Richard. Although the two were together for quite a few years, they never had kids together. The couple never explained why, but it could be due to their age difference, or perhaps even their very busy schedules.

The couple had a lot going against them, and eventually their relationship fizzled out. In 1995, Richard and Cindy made the big announcement that they were getting divorced after being married for only four years. As a result, the reigning “it” couple called it quits, and was no more.

3 Cindy Claimed They Were Never Friends

According to Cindy, one thing that really contributed to the downfall of her marriage with Richard was the fact that the two were never actually friends. Cindy finds it important in a relationship that you’re also friends, and when it came to Richard, he was Richard Gere, and she was a young model trying to find herself.

2 Cindy Eventually Remarried

Although things with Richard didn’t work out, that didn’t mean that Cindy didn’t get to have her happily ever after. A few years later after their big divorce, Cindy married her current husband, Rande Gerber in 1998 in the Bahamas. This time, she got to wear a white dress. The two went on to have two kids together, Kaia Jordan Gerber and Presley Walker Gerber.

1 Richard Remarried And Divorced Again

Just like Cindy, Richard eventually found his happily ever after too, even if it took a little longer. After Cindy, he married Carey Lowell in 2002 and had their son, Homer. The two eventually divorced in 2016. In 2018 Richard married again, this time to Alejandra Silva. The two have two kids together, their 1-year-old son Alexander, and another baby just born.
