Though it has been more than 25 years since the first video game movie, the film industry still has trouble adapting games to the big screen. A lot of people may have liked Pokémon Detective Pikachu, but audiences are still very skeptical of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Maybe you just can't cram an entire 20-30 hour video game into a single movie.

Today we're going to be looking at the 15 Worst and 5 Best Classic Shows Based Off Video Games, According to IMDb. Apparently, there do seem to be more bad than good video game cartoons out there, so the list ended up uneven. And since we're going to be focusing on "Classic" shows, we won't be looking at anything made in the past ten years. So as awful as Mega Man: Fully Charged and as great as Castlevania may be, neither of them will be considered for this list.

17 Worst: Saturday Supercade (6.8)

via twitter.com

One of the earliest video game cartoons was Saturday Supercade, an hour-long Saturday morning show comprised of shorter cartoon segments. These segments were based on popular arcade games, including Frogger, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. The thing is, these early arcade games didn't have much in the way of story, so the cartoons had to add so much they hardly resembled the original games.

16 Worst: Pole Position (6.7)

via thenewswheel.com

Another 80's video game cartoon, Pole Position was based on the racing game of the same name. Of course, since arcade games didn't really have plots back then, DIC Audiovisuel was faced with making their own story.

Unfortunately the characters were stupid to the point of being annoying and the racing scenes would sometimes be dizzying and confusing. A disappointing cartoon. About the only really memorable part is the rocking intro song.

15 Worst: Mortal Kombat: Conquest (6.5)

via imdb.com

The only live-action show to make this list, Mortal Kombat: Conquest was seemingly greenlit due to the popularity of action fantasy shows in the late 90's such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. And while the show does have some pretty impressive fight choreography, it's held back by some really cheap CGI and a confusing plot that takes place hundreds of years before the original games.

14 Best: F-Zero: GP Legend (7.4)

via youtube.com

Though Captain Falcon is more commonly known for Super Smash Bros. than F-Zero nowadays, confidence in the sci-fi racer was still high in 2003, leading to an anime adaptation. F-Zero: GP Legend is a reboot taking place in 2201.

Despite the changes to the source material, it seems fans are fond of this anime, even though FoxBox pulled the show from their lineup after only fifteen episodes. That may have more to do with 4Kids' modifications to the show, though. Look up the original Japanese version instead.

13 Worst: Captain N: The Game Master (6.4)

via deviantart.com

Now we're getting into some real crap here. Captain N: The Game Master was the ultimate Nintendo fanboy fantasy: a kid is warped into a video game world he must save alongside several beloved Nintendo characters. However, nearly every character here gets ruined by the show. Both Kid Icarus and Mega Man have really annoying speech impediments and Simon Belmont is a self-absorbed jerk. It's downright disrespectful.

12 Worst: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (6.3)

via crave.com

I was reluctant to include this show on the worst list, but let's be honest, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! is not very good. The live-action segments are silly and the cartoon is very cheaply animated. That shouldn't be a surprise, given that it was produced by DIC, the same guys behind Captain N and Pole Position. They've become infamous for leaving mistakes in their finished cartoons.

11 Worst: Fire Emblem (6.2)

via youtube.com

Though the Fire Emblem series wouldn't see a global release until the Game Boy Advance, a 1997 original video animation based on the series was still given an English dub and a Western release. Based on Mystery of the Emblem, this OVA follows Marth (named Mars for some reason) as he journeys to fulfill his destiny. Of course, we never get to that destiny part. The OVA is only two episodes long and covers only a very small part of the game's plot.

10 Worst: Adventures Of Sonic the Hedgehog (6.2)

via CONtv.com

In the early 90s there were two major Sonic cartoons: a dark and dramatic action series known as Sonic SatAM and an over-the-top gagfest called Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Somehow, Sonic SatAM was canceled after only 26 episodes and Adventures was given a full 65 episodes, plus a Christmas special despite being considerably worse on every front.

9 Best: Pokémon (7.4)

via YouTube.com

Of course, if you're talking about video game cartoons that are actually good, the first series that will pop up in most people's heads is Pokémon, and with good reason. The original Game Boy titles were popular, but the anime made Pokémon a global phenomenon, with the cute little Pikachu spearheading the movement. This series is even continuing to this day with more than a thousand episodes!

8 Worst: Mortal Kombat: Defenders Of The Realm (6.2)

via ChildhoodRemastered.com

Someone decided it would be a great idea to turn the most violent and controversial video game of the 90s into a kid's cartoon. Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm served as a sort-of sequel to both the first movie and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in which Raiden's warriors defend Earthrealm from invading robots and Baraka clones. Naturally, the game doesn't translate well to the format.

7 Worst: Sonic Underground (6.1)

via SonicNewNetwork.com

As bad as Adventures was, Sonic Underground was even worse. In a plot that sounds like it was taken straight from someone's fanfic, Sonic reunites with his long lost siblings Sonia and Manic (all voiced by Jaleel White, even the girl) and finds out they are part of the royal family. Hidden away by the Queen once Robotnik started taking over Mobius, it is their destiny to overthrow Robotnik using the power of rock. As expected, the premise couldn't keep the show afloat.

6 Worst: Street Fighter (6.0)

via youtube.com

Airing alongside Defenders of the Realm on USA Network's Action Extreme Team, Street Fighter is somehow worse than that mistake. Guile leads an international team of crimefighters against M. Bison and Shadaloo.

Meanwhile, series mainstays Ryu and Ken are reduced to bumbling, comic relief treasure hunters. The action is stilted, the humor is corny and the dialogue ranges from "so bad it's good" to just plain old bad. At least we got some pretty good memes out of it.

5 Best: Earthworm Jim (7.5)

via YouTube.com (Aiko Chan)

The only American cartoon to make it into the "Best" list, Earthworm Jim was an underrated show based on the video game of the same name. Following the adventures of the titular earthworm turned superhero via robotic super suit, Earthworm Jim was an over-the-top parody of superheroes and action cartoons. Not only did it capture the spirit of the games, it did so with style.

4 Worst: The Legend of Zelda (5.9)

via Inverse.com

Airing on Fridays on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! was The Legend of Zelda, an action fantasy cartoon based on the classic NES game. The opening credits promise action and adventure that fans of the game have come to know. Then Link ruins it all by opening his mouth. While he may not have much personality in the games, the cartoon is worse for turning Link into an unlikable jerk.

3 Worst: Donkey Kong Country (5.7)

via YouTube.com (tropicalfreeze)

If The Legend of Zelda was a disaster, Donkey Kong Country was an abomination. As one of the earliest computer-animated shows, some awkwardness is expected. Unlike Beast Wars: Transformers and ReBoot, the exaggerated expressions and motion-captured movements in this show end up looking very creepy and weird. Then there's the musical numbers which... leave much to be desired.

2 Worst: Darkstalkers (4.5)

via aminoapps.com

Don't be surprised if you never heard of the Darkstalkers cartoons, as it only lasted thirteen episodes. For some reason they made the main protagonist, Morrigan Aenslan,d a villain. Then there's the animation. Graz Entertainment gave "cutting corners" a whole new meaning. Fight scenes would often consist of the same couple frames repeating slowly and there were frequent coloring inconsistencies, as well as other mistakes.

1 Best: Street Fighter II V (7.7)

via youtube.com

Street Fighter II V is well loved by fans of the game and 90s anime, especially when compared to the terrible American animated series. First off, Ryu and Ken are the main characters, not comic relief treasure hunters. Second, the series was directed by Gisaburo Sugii, the same guy who directed Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, one of the few good video game movies. Last but not least, the action is top notch.

Think any of these video game shows should rank higher or lower on this list? Go complain about it to people with IMDb accounts.
