Will Smith has recently found himself in quite a bit of trouble after storming the stage and slapping comedian Chris Rock on a live television broadcast. The controversial stint was prompted by Rock's joke over Smith's wife Jada Pinkett and her shaved hairdo - caused by alopecia. Although the actor ended up coming home with an Oscar win for Best Actor for his role in King Richard, the violent act was not simply forgotten. Rightfully so, many fellow artists have condemned his violent conduct and the Oscars even banned him from attending events for the next ten years.

With that being said, however, the infamous slap was not the only controversial thing the King Richard actor had done in his life. While he's known for his comedic and positive on-screen portrayals in his career, Will Smith's personal life has not exactly been safe from media scrutiny and controversy. Here's a look at (almost) every controversial thing that the actor has done in the past.

6 Will Smith's 1989 Arrest For Assault

Back in 1989, Will Smith, aged 20 at the time, was arrested over an alleged assault that took place in Philadelphia. The reports connected the actor's involvement in an argument with record promoter William Hendricks which escalated into a fistfight, causing the man to almost lose sight in one eye. The altercation took place days following Smith's first-ever Grammy win alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff.

"Will had to spend a night in the cell at the West Philadelphia police station with other inmates waking him up all night long and asking for his autograph," an insider told The National Enquirer, "It was the worst night of his life. He wants to forget it ever happened."

5 Will Smith's Feud With 'Fresh Prince' Co-Star Janet Hubert

Janet Hubert, who previously co-starred with Smith in Fresh Prince as the maternal figure of Aunt Viv, vanished from the show at the end of Season 3 in 1993. Her character was re-cast as Daphne Maxwell Reid. What happened in real life was that Will Smith had verbally attacked her in a 1993 radio interview in Atlanta.

"I can say straight up that Janet Hubert wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show because I know she is going to dog me in the press," the actor said. "She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing. She’s mad now but she’s been mad all along."

However, the pair reunited back in 2020 on HBO Max special The Red Table Talk, detailing an emotional talk backstage between the two on the series' reunion. "I hated what you did. I just hated what you did. You took my career away of 30-something years," the actress says in the clip. "You just went too far when you were younger, and I know you always had to win."

4 When Will Smith Lost His Cool At A Reporter Who Tried To Kiss Him

The Chris Rock slap wasn't the first time something of that nature happened with Will Smith at a major event. Back in 2012, the actor created chaotic headlines after slapping Ukrainian reporter Vitalii Sediuk on the red carpet of the Men in Black III premiere in Moscow. He did not even hesitate to tell the media on the red carpet that the reporter was "lucky I didn't sucker punch him."

3 Will Smith And Scientology

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been associated with the controversial religious movement Scientology. They have been vigorously denying the allegations. His visible ties with the group began all the way back in 2007, when he donated $122,500 to several Scientology organizations, just two years before operating a private school called New Village Leadership Academy in California that reportedly taught the controversial religion to its students.

2 Will Smith's Marital Drama With Jada Pinkett

For years, Will and Jada Pinket Smith's marriage has been a public consumption, and sometimes, their updates can be a bit TMI. While the pair tied the knot all the way back in 1997 as a monogamous couple, they revealed that they'd been in an open marriage a few years ago. Jada had been linked with singer August Alsina, while Will, in addition to fantasizing about having a "harem of famous girlfriends," was also rumored to develop a relationship with his Focus co-star Margot Robbie, to which she denied.

1 Will Smith's 10-Year Oscars Ban

In the recent developments of Will Smith's slap at the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned the actor from attending the event for ten years. The actor had no option but to "accept and respect the Academy's decision."

"The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year," academy President David Rubin and Chief Executive Dawn Hudson said in a statement, as noted by Reuters. "However, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage."
