This past Friday, July 31, it was announced that Courteney Cox will reprise her role as Gale Weathers in Scream 5. She will join the cast, along with her ex-husband David Arquette, who played Dewey Riley. With two original cast members returning to the franchise, it raises the question of whether or not Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott.

The Scream franchise has grossed over $600M at the global box office in total. The sequel will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are best known for directing the 2019 thriller Ready Or Not. The original director of the first four films was the late Wes Craven.

Both Cox and Arquette have shared their excitement at returning to the popular horror franchise. Cox shared an image of the Ghostface killer mask with red text that reads: "I can't wait to see this face again." Cox played the role of the fame-seeking reporter in 1996’s Scream. She appeared in all four sequels.

Likewise, back in May, Arquette revealed that he was thrilled to return to the franchise. "I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new," he said in a statement. "Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy."

Campbell has yet to announce her return as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming film. Her character is the main heroine and protagonist of the Scream franchise. In an interview with Collider’s Christina Radish, Campbell gave some insight into the fifth installment.

“I’m not a hundred percent on it, but to be honest, the two directors have made some great work. They wrote a letter to me, expressing what great fans of Wes’ work they are, and how honored they are that they’re getting the chance to make Scream 5 because the Scream franchise is the reason that they’re directors now,” she said. “So, we’ll see. Hopefully, we can all see eye to eye on everything and make something great, but it’s a process.”

Campbell shared her feelings on the possibility of reprising her character in the latest sequel. She has appeared in all the other sequels up until this point.

She said, “I think you can always tell them more with these stories, and they’re such fun films. There’s obviously a huge audience for them, and the audiences wants to see more of them. You can always go further with the journey. Certainly, with Sidney, she comes to some new shift in her life, at the time, and I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Scream 5 is set to release in 2021.
