Friends became a breakout TV series following its first season on NBC in 1994. Its lead stars Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Courteney Cox starred in a whopping 10 seasons of the popular sitcom before concluding their 10-year run in 2004.

And while there have been endless moments from the show that have continued to influence our day-to-day lives to this day, there’s one cast member who has publicly spoken out about not even remembering filming most of her scenes on the show.

Cox, who played Monica Geller, recently admitted that when fans tell her about their favorite episodes from the show, the mother-of-one can’t even recall ever filming those scenes because she claims to have a bad memory and therefore doesn’t share the same nostalgic feeling like some of her co-stars.

While she certainly still remembers spending 10 years of her life filming what has since become one of the most popular sitcoms in history, Cox can’t recount a lot of her character’s biggest storylines because she has no recollection of filming those parts. Here’s the lowdown…

Does Courteney Cox Have A Bad Memory?

In an interview on the Today show in March 2022, Cox admitted that she doesn’t remember filming many of the episodes on Friends.

The 57-year-old said she didn’t realize it until she was gearing up to appear in the HBO reunion special last year when Cox noticed that her co-stars had much better memories of their time on Friends than she did.

That’s not to say that her time on the sitcom was miserable — Cox simply doesn’t remember even being present in a string of episodes.

The Scream star joked that she should have been better prepared for the reunion taping by doing a Friends marathon and watching all the episodes again so she’d be a little better prepared for the unexpected questions.

Because when it came down to answering questions from host James Corden, the Hollywood veteran was struggling to come up with a response.

“I should have watched all 10 seasons because when I did the reunion and was asked questions, I was like, ‘I don’t remember being there,” she explained.

“Yeah, I don’t remember filming so many episodes. I see it on TV sometimes and I stop and go, ‘Oh my God, I don’t remember this at all,’ but it’s so funny.”

Courteney’s Memory Isn’t So Bad After All

The Friends reunion aired on May 27 last year and saw the entire cast return to the iconic set for an unscripted two-hour special.

Fans of the show were left with pangs of nostalgia as they shared their favorite moments from the show, along with trivia questions, behind-the-scenes clips, and never-before-seen footage from the cast during their ten-year stint on the sitcom.

According to Variety, the special was almost as big as the first-day streaming numbers HBO amassed for the release of Wonder Woman 1984 on its streaming platform, with 29% of U.S. streaming households catching the highly-anticipated reunion within 24 hours after its release.

While she doesn’t remember much from her time filming Friends, during her interview on the Today show, Cox did recollect the time she and her cast members were flown to Las Vegas right before the season premiere of Friends in 1994.

The trip was organized by TV director James Burrows, who flew the show’s stars out to the City of Lights in what he told them would be their last moments of normal life before fame would take over.

Cox said she was handed $500 to splurge at the casinos before Burrows told her that the fun-filled occasion would be one of the last times she would be able to walk the streets in public without being recognized.

“He said, ‘I want you to take care, like really take notice of this moment because it will be the last time that all six of you together can walk through a casino.’

“And we were like, ‘Really?’ And it was true. We could never do that (again). I mean, I don’t wanna sound like, ‘Look at us.’ We’re not, you know, the Beatles. But people feel like they know you.’

Cox recently reprised her role as Gale Weathers in the Scream reboot, which generated over $160 million at the box office worldwide.

A sequel has already been confirmed to be in development in the slasher horror franchise.
