Courteney Cox and Snow Patrol member Johnny McDaid have been in a relationship since 2013 and are still going strong, despite having one little communication problem.

The Friends star, hailing from Alabama, may have some trouble understanding the guitarist and pianist from the Northern Irish band. Born in Derry, the second-largest city in Northern Ireland, McDaid has recently revealed that Cox can't understand a word he says. He explained his accent makes it hard for someone from across the pond to work out what he means, and his partner is no exception.

Courteney Cox And Johnny McDaid's Communication Problem

In May this year, McDaid — who's been a regular member of Snow Patrol since 2011 — opened up on his romance with the Shining Vale actress, revealing Cox still has some issues understanding his accent after eight years together.

"Well my partner is American and she hasn't understood a word I've said in eight years. She hasn't got a clue!" McDaid told the MailOnline.

While he has retained some Northern Irish features and sounds, McDaid has explained his accent has changed throughout the years, softening to the so-called "transatlantic" accent, a blend of features from American and British English.

"I think what happens is when you're from where I'm from and you do interviews with people who aren't - people just look at you and go, what are you saying? I think the accent begins to soften, and I left home at 17," he said.

Johnny McDaid And Courteney Cox Spent Lockdown Apart

McDaid is based in London, while Cox continues living in the US, meaning that the couple had to spend most of lockdown during the first stages of the Covid-19 pandemic apart due to the US' travel restrictions.

"We were apart as many people were apart from their families and loved ones, but we were able to stay as connected as we could and both of us dived into being creative," McDaid said.

"She made her show and a new product line, and I made Bad Habits with Ed [Sheeran], so we were able to stay really productive even if it was tough being apart - and it was tough, but we don’t have the toughest lives in the world - we're so lucky."

In 2021, Cox explained she and McDaid hadn't seen each other in months while she quarantined with her daughter Coco (from her first marriage to Scream co-star David Arquette).

On Sirius XM's The Howard Stern Show, Cox was asked about how she and McDaid managed to keep the spark alive while apart.

Courteney Cox And Johnny McDaid Vacationed In Italy

The couple have reunited since 2021 and spent most of this year together. They have just enjoyed a romantic holiday on the Amalfi Coast, in the south of Italy, with Cox joking she has been learning to drive in Ireland and "on the open seas" in Italy with a hot instructor aka McDaid.

It's not the first time the actress has gushed over her relationship with the musician. In July, she posted a birthday tribute to her beau, calling him "my multitalented Johnny".

"He's extremely talented and obviously musical, but he's a poet and a writer. He's just so smart, and I find that really sexy. And then he is gorgeous," she also told Hello! in January this year.

Courteney Cox Got Candid On Her "Brutal" Split From Johnny McDaid In 2015

Cox and McDaid were introduced by celebrity friends, including his pal Ed Sheeran, in 2013. They announced their engagement in 2014, but called it off and broke up in 2015, before reuniting the following year.

"We were engaged for over a year and then we broke up," Cox said on Running Wild With Bear Grylls in 2016.

"He's from Ireland. And the way he regards love is precious. We have to treat it in a different way. It's more special. You coddle it. So, I didn't know how to regard love the way he does. And I definitely made a lot of mistakes that I see, whether it's co-dependency or people-pleasing. I didn't know how to bring it in. It was always external."

"I definitely have learned a lot, and no matter what, I will be a better person from that breakup, even though it was so brutal," she admitted.

"Everything's new. And we have both really worked on ourselves on the parts that needed the most attention. And it feels really different."
