Kids movies from the 90s really had a way of resonating with fans of all ages, and this is why many of these movies have remained incredibly popular since their release. Just look at the legacy that movies like The Sandlot have and the fact that they still hold up after all these years.

In 1996, Mara Wilson starred in Matilda alongside Danny DeVito. The young actress was a huge child star who walked away from Hollywood, and this is one of her most beloved movies. Little did people know that DeVito had a hand in taking care of Wilson while production was underway.

Let's take a look at the dynamic between Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito.

Mara Wilson Was A Major Child Star

In the 90s, Mara Wilson became one of the most recognizable child stars of all time thanks to a string of successful films that brought her into the spotlight. The young actress had talent in spades, and it would not take long for her to leave a huge impression on movie fans around the world.

Wilson's young career would see her appear in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Miracle on 34th Street, and even on the television series, Melrose Place. A few hit projects made Wilson a popular name in Hollywood, and the young actress seemed to have the attention of mainstream audiences everywhere.

Wilson, however, would walk away from it all, which caught people by surprise. Being a child star isn't easy, and in recent years, she has opened up about her experiences and the impact that they had on her life. It paints a picture of a different side of Hollywood, and it is some truly eye-opening stuff.

The actress has also talked about her time making some of her biggest films, including one that she starred in alongside Danny DeVito.

She Made 'Matilda' With Danny DeVito

1996's Matilda remains one of the most loved movies from the 90s, with Wilson's performance in the movie still receiving praise. This movie currently holds a 90% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it seems like the vast majority of people loved what this movie brought to the table.

Wilson was the lead in the film, and the cast was rounded out with performers like Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, and Embeth Davidtz. Each performer played their respective role perfectly, and they truly brought Roald Dahl's classic story to life in a remarkable way all those years ago.

At the box office, the film underperformed, only bringing in $33 million. It was by no means a big hit, but as time went on, the movie's legacy continued to endure, and even now, people still love to go back and watch this movie.

What many people did not know at the time was that Wilson was shouldering a heavy burden while filming, and her co-stars wound up lending a helping hand to lift her spirits while production was taking place.

DeVito Looked After Wilson

During the production of Matilda, Wilson's mother was diagnosed with cancer, which was difficult for the young actress to deal with. Making a movie is hard enough, but a parents' cancer diagnosis can make things even harder.

According to Do You Remember, "Both Perlman and DeVito took extra time between takes with Mara. They even went so far as to bring her along for family for trips, including her as much as possible."

When talking about her mother's diagnosis and the role that DeVito played in her life while filming, Wilson would say, "I was eight years old. It was very hard…and they were very nice. While my mom was sick and in the hospital, they would invite me over and take care of me and get my mind off things. I felt very familial."

Prior to her passing, DeVito had a grand gesture for Wilson's mother, and this was something that he didn't tell the actress about for years.

"Unbeknownst to Mara, Devito visited Suzie in the hospital and showed her the post-production tape of the film. Years after Suzie passed away, Danny told Mara about the visit to the hospital with the almost-completed film and how she allowed her to watch it. This one act of kindness gave Mara peace of mind that her mother had seen a project she’d been so proud of," wrote Do You Remember.
