The forgettable interview took place in the summer of 2004. Dax Shepard was set to appear on the show, but from the start, it seemed as though things weren't going to be smooth. Shepard seemed to be a mess during the interview, throwing himself across Conan's desk.

The interview followed the same theme, as Conan tried to get stories out of Shepard, but the actor just wasn't making sense.

Major credit goes to Conan, who was somehow able to turn this into an interview, in large part, thanks to his amazing improv skills. Fans on YouTube agreed, and praised Conan for it.

One fan wrote, "Its actually amazing how Conan goes with his chaotic energy cause that wasn't what they rehearsed at all. Shows how amazing of an entertainer Conan is."

Another fan would praise Shepard for getting clean, while also complementing O'Brien on his interview skills. "Seriously kudos to dax for 1. Getting clean. 2. Still being entertaining whilst wasted. And a massive kudos of course to Conan for wrangling the whole uncomfortable arrangement!"

Years later, Shepard himself would comment on the interview, and it was just as bad as we imagined behind the scenes for the actor.

Dax Shepard Admitted He Was A Mess During His Interview With Conan, And Was Banned For Years Because Of It

Speaking alongside Esquire, Shepard revealed he was blackout drink prior to the interview and woke up just 20-minutes before the two went on-air.

Shepard recalls not understanding what was going in, and just rambling during the interview.

"I show up on the show, I don't know what he's talking about. I can tell he's queuing me up for stories I've told, but I don't know any of the stories. So, I'm just doing what I can to be funny out there and I am a mess."

Shepard admitted for the fans the interview was fine, but for Conan as the host, it was a complete disaster given that they ventured off away from what was discussed during the pre-interview. Because of Shepard's mess, he was banned from the show until he got cleaned up.

"It was fine for the audience. But for him, what a disaster. I didn't know any of the stories," he remembers. "So I was banned from that show for some years, until I got sober and I got myself back on it and now I’ve been on it a bazillion times."

Despite how tough the interview was on Conan, the host revealed it wasn't his worst.

Thankfully, Dax Shepard's ban would be lifted, and the actor appeared on Conan's show multiple times in the recent years. Although the interview was a forgettable, Conan refused to call it his worst.

Conan called Abel Ferrara his worst guest. According to Conan, even prior to the interview, the director almost fled, and was caught trying to leave on the street.

Conan recalls, "Abel Ferrara got booked on our show and he’s a wild eccentric … and he fled, during the show, before his segment. He ran away, got into the elevator, and was out on the street when [my segment producer] gave chase."

"He caught him, led him back, made him — pushing him — got him backstage. He came on camera against his will. And then, he came out and I think started yelling at me."
