Today is Demi Lovato's 29th birthday.

They have been in the media spotlight since she was seven years old - appearing in children's television show Barney & Friends.

Now the star - who identifies as non-binary - took time to reflect on their gender journey up until now. But they have confused some fans after suggesting there may be a time when she identifies as trans.

Lovato spoke as part of the 19th Represents Summit.

The "Heart Attack" singer, who first identified as gender nonbinary in May explained: "Being nonbinary, what that means...is that I'm so much more than the binary of man and woman."

"And that we are all so much more if we allow ourselves the ability to look within ourselves and challenge that binary that we've grown up living in,'" Demi continued.

Later, Lovato also discussed the fears they felt around the time that they came out as they/them.

"I was very nervous in the beginning to come out as nonbinary because I didn't want people to think it was inauthentic."

"I just wanted people to see what coming out as nonbinary meant to my healing process,' they added.

They also shared thoughts on where they might be headed in the future regarding gender expression and identity."

"There might be a time where I identify as trans...there might be a time where I identify as nonbinary and gender nonconforming my entire life."

"Or maybe there's a period of time when I get older that I identify as a woman," Demi reflected.

"I have a feeling that it's not going to ever go back to one way or the other," Demi concluded.

"But I just, it's about keeping it open and free and just I'm a very fluid person, and so that goes with how I express myself as well."

However some social media commentators were left baffled by Demi's comments.

"This is difficult to comprehend. What does it mean to be trans when you're already non-binary," one person wrote online.

"They way children are raised has changed dramatically over the years but it seems that we haven't taught a generation to love and accept themselves for themselves," a second added.

"Tone deaf to treat such an issue as a social media tease especially when there is so much suffering in the world," a third commented.
