If you're a film fan, then you're aware that Daniel Day-Lewis is a brilliant actor, and that he takes his craft seriously. His method acting is quite notorious, with many people feeling that he takes things too far. In fact, he's had people completely avoid him on set.

While making There Will Be Blood, one of the best films of its era, Lewis turned in a great performance. It just so happens that this performance allegedly came at the price of intimidating a co-star so badly, that he wound up leaving the project.

Let's take a look at the story in question.

Daniel Day-Lewis Is A Legendary Actor

The entertainment industry is home to many talented performers, all of whom bring something different to the table. While every star has their strengths, there are few that can do everything in acting as well as Daniel Day-Lewis.

The actor has been a featured performer in some truly outstanding films, and though the films themselves can stand on their own, the actor's unreal performance in each of them helped elevate them to new heights. Simply put, he makes everything and everyone around him better when he takes part in a film.

Thanks to his consistent ability to deliver sublime work, many consider Daniel Day-Lewis to be arguably the most talented actor of his era. This is a bold claim, sure, but a look at both his body of work and his list of accomplishments will quickly reveal that he is in truly rare territory. It's all subjective, of course, but finding someone better than Daniel Day-Lewis is a near impossibility.

Daniel Day-Lewis is certainly known for many things, one of which is the mental way he goes about preparing for and playing a character in a film.

He Takes His Film Work A Little Too Seriously

There are countless stories of Daniel Day-Lewis going above and beyond for a performance, and he is known for being tough to deal with on set.

"How obsessive is Day-Lewis in his commitment to a role? During “The Last Of The Mohicans,” he “built a canoe, learned to track and skin animals and perfected the use of a 12-pound flintlock gun, which he took everywhere he went, even to a Christmas dinner.” During 1998 “My Left Foot,” Day-Lewis trained for eight weeks to master putting a needle on a record with his foot as if he was stricken with cerebral-palsy like the character in the film," The Playlist writes.

Believe us when we say that there are far more extreme examples than this. The actor also got into brawls with strangers, lived on prison rations, and even lived without electricity and running water, all for the sake of his art.

At one point, it was alleged that another actor was too intimidated by the legend to work with him, leading to a poor performance and an early departure.

His Alleged Intimidation On 'There Will Be Blood'

There Will Be Blood is an exceptional film, and before Paul Dano got the gig, Kel O'Neill was in the role. O'Neill however, departed the project early, and rumors surfaced that he was intimidated by Daniel Day-Lewis on set.

According to The New York Times, "Halfway through the 60-day shoot, Paul Thomas Anderson realized that the second lead actor, who plays [Day-Lewis’s]nemesis, was not strong enough. He was replaced by the versatile young actor Paul Dano, but three weeks of scenes with Day-Lewis needed to be reshot. During “Gangs of New York,” Day-Lewis would stay in character and deliberately glare at his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, mirroring the contentious dynamic that these men had in the film. While DiCaprio withstood the pressure (and Dano thrived on it) there are reports that the first actor suffered from intimidation. “It just wasn’t the right fit,” Anderson explained diplomatically."

That is a serious accusation to levy against a performer, and it really painted both O'Neill in a negative light, and Daniel Day-Lewis as someone who probably takes his time on set a little too seriously.

Per Yahoo, when speaking with Vulture, O'Neill said, "It wasn't drinks every night with Daniel on set, but there's a fundamental decency to the way he comports himself in those environments that gets lost in the shuffle of these rumours."

This is some shocking information to say the least, and it might have some fans looking at the film a bit differently. There's no denying that Dano was brilliant in the movie, but intimidation could have greatly affected Kel O'Neill's performance.
