Disney Slams Scarlett Johansson For Suing Them As Marvel Fans Back Her

The media giant called Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit against them 'sad and distressing.'

Fans have come to Scarlett Johansson defense after she Disney responded to her $50million Black Widow lawsuit.

In an extraordinary statement the multi-media institution called her lawsuit "sad and distressing" insisting it has "no merit whatsoever."

Johansson, 36, filed her lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, alleging that she lost out on more than $50million as a result.

Black Widow is being released on streaming service Disney+ at the same time as its debut in theaters, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The actress claimed she had been guaranteed that Black Widow would have an exclusive theatrical release.

The bulk of her salary was based on the box office performance.

Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Widow took in $60million on the streaming platform Disney+ on the opening weekend alone.

The movie set a pandemic-era record brought in $218million worldwide over opening weekend earlier this month.

This includes streaming figures, plus $80million domestic box office and $78million internationally.

However, the movie's box-office performance dropped off sharply after the opening weekend. This led movie critics to question whether the Disney+ streaming release was the reason why many opted not to go to the cinema.

But Disney has hit back at Johannsson's complaints.

"The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic," the company said in the statement.

The statement also stunningly revealed how much Johansson has made from the film: $20million. Her reported fee for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame was $15million.

"Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson's contract," the company said.

"Furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date."

It was not immediately clear what Johansson's additional compensation from streaming could be.

But fans were mostly #TeamScarJo.

"Scarlett Johansson isn't being greedy here. By releasing Black Widow on Disney+, then not counting that revenue towards her expected salary, as is done with Box Office tickets, Disney tried to screw her out of what she was owed. F*** Disney," one person tweeted.

"It is callous to scream, "COVID! Pandemic!" when you've been caught violating a contact," a second added.

"When Robert Downey Jr. got paid 25x times more than Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans for Avengers 1 he was just being savvy, but when Scarlett Johansson says Disney breached her contract she's just a greedy monster who has enough money already, huh," a third chimed in.

"Scarlett Johansson is one of the few actresses in the world that makes/earns more money than her male colleagues. She deserves it and has fought for it. She's not greedy. She's standing up for herself," a fourth commented.
