Son Tweets About Father's Struggling Donut Shop, Causes Flashmob That Empties Store

After a son tweeted about how sad his father was in his empty donut shop, it caused a flash mob that saw the whole store completely sell out.

Billy’s Donuts opened their latest location on Thursday, March 7. The store is actually part of a chain of donut shops owned by Satharith By, who started the whole donut thing years ago and named the chain after his son, Billy By.

Things were pretty quiet on Thursday. Same with Friday. By Saturday, Billy was getting a bit worried that his dad’s latest donut shop might turn into a flop. So, being the tech-savvy youth that he is, he turned to social media to drum up a bit of interest. And he used one of humanity’s biggest motivators: guilt.

“My dad is sad cause no one is coming to his new donut shop 😭,” Billy tweeted last Saturday, along with a bunch of sad pictures of an empty donut shop and an empty parking lot. But the store didn’t stay that way for long.

Billy had initially expected to just get his friends to come over to the store and buy some donuts. Instead, a few people came in. Then dozens. By Sunday morning, Billy’s Donuts in Missouri City, Texas, had a line going out the door. And more people continued to pour in.

Local news showed up Sunday to a store that was completely rammed with customers. Helping things along was the official Twitter account, which picked up on Billy’s tweet and gave it a bit of a signal boost. That kept the store jam-packed the entire day, to the point where they were completely sold out of stock.

Things stayed just as busy on Monday, now with even more news crews on the scene and official Twitter representatives arriving to buy out the entire store’s stock for a second straight day. They also gave everyone some pretty sweet yellow t-shirts, too.

So if you’re starting a new business, be sure to never skimp on your social media presence. You never know what a single tweet can get you.
