An inebriated driver smashing his car into a tree does not usually make international headlines, but when said driver tells police that he crashed because he was trying to drive “like Ace Ventura,” well, the story definitely warrants some media scrutiny.
The driver, who is from Lincoln, Nebraska, was charged with DUI after plowing his Buick into a tree and a wall. He told responding officers that he had crashed because, in his own words, he was forced to drive "like Ace Ventura" with his head out the window in the rain because his windshield wipers had stopped working. Yes, he actually used the words, “like Ace Ventura,” in his statement to police following his accident early Saturday morning, according to Global News.
For those of you who are no cinephiles, this drunk driver is referring to Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, a 1994 comedy film where the actor portrays an animal detective tasked with finding the mascot of the U.S. football team Miami Dolphins.
According to police documents obtained by The Smoking Gun, 26-year-old Rocky Dumais was driving his 2005 Buick Rendezvous along South Cotner Boulevard at around 1 o'clock in the morning when he missed the curve and drove straight on into a tree in an adjacent front yard, before coming to a stop against a retaining wall.
The Lincoln Police Department responded promptly but Dumais had fled the scene of the accident. The police thereafter managed to arrest him and take him into custody. According to the report, Dumais told officers he had crashed his Buick because his windshield wipers were failing to keep the windscreen clear, forcing him to drive with his head out the window in the manner made famous by Jim Carrey.
Testing revealed that Dumais had a blood alcohol content of 0.137. While he was uninjured, according to police, his Buick was heavily damaged in the accident. This Ace Ventura wannabe was charged with driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license.
While we do not know what stunt this driver will pull next, we sure hope it won't have anything to do with Dumb and Dumber!
