Hollywood can be a tricky place. Stars have an ideal version of themselves in mind, while agents and other members of the team might have a different outlook in mind.

Early on in his career, that's exactly what took place for Dwayne Johnson, as he was asked to be someone who he truly isn't.

While on 'SNL' back in 2000, it was apparent he was trying to conform with Hollywood.

The appearance turned out to be great, however, looking back, DJ might've done things a little differently. He was totally flexible with whatever 'SNL' had in mind, which is a breath of fresh air compared to some other celebs in the past.

However, a certain topic from the past was off-limits, and looking back, he might've done things differently. Thankfully, he returned to the show in 2015 and this time around, things were different.

Johnson's Team Was Trying To Change Him

Johnson was on top of the wrestling world when he decided to leave sports and entertainment. He was entering a new world and at the time, DJ thought that meant dropping everything he was in the past.

At least that's what his team of agents had told him, they basically wanted him to become someone else, forgetting about everything he did in the past.

This hurt DJ as although he was still successful, he really wasn't allowed to be himself. Eventually, the A-list star had enough, and he decided to do things on his own, instead of confirming with Hollywood's standard at the time.

While accepting an MTV Award, he opened up detailing the struggle from his early beginnings.

"Hollywood, they didn’t know what the hell to do with me. I mean, I was half-black, half-Samoan, 6 foot 4, 275-pound pro wrestler. I was told at that time, 'Well, you gotta be a certain way. You gotta drop some weight. You gotta be somebody different. You gotta stop working out. You gotta stop calling yourself The Rock.' I made a choice, and the choice was, I wasn’t gonna conform to Hollywood. Hollywood was gonna conform to me."

That was the moment everything changed for DJ. However, just prior to that, he was still listening to his people and this meant, getting away from his true self.

Nothing Was Off-Limits During His 'SNL Stint' Except For Wrestling

It was obvious that DJ was on the path to becoming a huge star. In 2000, he was already headlining 'SNL' and bringing in massive ratings for the show.

He was slowly starting to transition at that point, however, he wasn't given the best advice, which in turn, was to separate wrestling from his acting career.

Because of this, The Rock made it clear to 'SNL' writers that anything wrestling-related was off the table, absolutely anything else, no matter how embarrassing, was okay.

“I told the [SNL] writers I definitely didn’t want to do any wrestling stuff,” Johnson says. “But I guess the writers wanted to test me, because they came back and said, ‘Okay, how would you like to do a sketch in drag?’ I said, sure, just no wrestling. So they came back to me again and said, ‘Okay, how would you like to put on a monkey suit and simulate having sex with another guy’s leg?’ I said, absolutely, just no wrestling.”

The cameo was great though looking back, DJ might've done things a little differently. Thankfully in 2015, he was able to re-write his wrongs.

It Was A Different Dwayne When He Hosted Again In 2015

He would return to 'SNL' back in 2015 and this time around, Dwayne Johnson was a huge star in Hollywood. Most importantly, he wasn't shying away from his past and as it turns out, his best skit on the night was wrestling-related, as he proudly displayed his past on the show.

EW called it the best skit of the entire show.

''The escalation of the Wrestlemania promo sketch was perfect, with Johnson and Bobby Moynihan playing two pro wrestlers trash-talking each other. But Johnson’s trash-talk is real dirt, which he found by hiring a private investigator. It’s amazing how the instigating herpes taunt becomes tame in comparison to the revelation of a long-lost child for Moynihan’s wrestler. Utterly dark, but totally brilliant, and Johnson, Moynihan, and Taran Killam sell it with incredible timing and delivery."

A tremendous redemption story and yet another example of how being yourself is truly the best way to go, even when it comes to the wacky world of Hollywood.
