Rapper Eminem deserves a standing ovation and a huge round of applause, but this time not just for his musical talents. Sources saw that the 45-year-old rapper posted a photo of himself holding up his AA coin like a badge of honor on his Instagram account. He captioned the photo: "Celebrated my 10 years yesterday."
Only one of the rapper's eye shows in the photo as he holds the coin out in front of himself. The coin, presented to members of Alcoholics Anonymous for reaching different levels of sobriety, is specially marked with a Roman numeral X to celebrate 10 years along with the words "unity", "service", and "recovery" emblazoned on it.
"In 2007, I overdosed on pills and I went into the hospital," Eminem said in a 2015 interview with Men's Journal magazine. "I was close to 230 pounds. I'm not sure how I got so big but I have ideas. The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I'd been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach so to avoid a stomachache, I was constantly eating - and eating badly."
He went on to say that with his head now clear, he had goals in mind. "When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober," Eminem said. "Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running. It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect. It’s easy to understand how people replace addiction with exercise. One addiction for another but one that’s good for them.”
Fellow rapper Royce Da 5'9 tweeted his support by posting, "Happy sobriety birthday to my mentor @Eminem ... Keep fighting the good fight homie ... I love you for life."
Eminem recently performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Sunday, April 22nd. We couldn't be more proud of this performer and for the great example he is setting for others who might be struggling with addiction.
