Emma Stone reveals she feels protective of Andrew Garfield's version of Spider-Man.
The Oscar-winning actress played Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Stone's character had a prominent role in director Marc Webb's films and was one of Peter Parker's classmates, eventually becoming his love interest.
With multiple rumors surrounding Stone's return to the franchise via a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actress has finally revealed if there's any truth to them. She also explained her reason behind signing on to play Gwen Stacy in the two films.
Emma Stone Loved Working With Andrew Garfield
While working on the films, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield began a relationship, and dated on-and-off for four years before splitting up in 2015. They've remained close friends ever since, and the actress revealed she joined the Spider-Man cast to work with Andrew Garfield.
"Really what was most exciting about Spider-Man was working with Andrew [Garfield]," the actress shared in an interview with Josh Horowitz of MTV NEWS.
She further explained, recounting her audition alongside the actor. "When I did that audition, I was like, 'He's so amazing, he's such an incredible actor.'"
Stone's decision had nothing to do with the fact that Spider-Man was a massive film franchise, and she would bring a major comic-book character to life. "It wasn't really the idea of like, 'Oh it's this huge, larger-than-life franchise,'" she said, adding "if anything, that was like, really daunting.
The actress described the experience as "challenging", and shared she "loved working with Marc [Webb]" and "loved working with that whole team."
Tom Holland has taken on the mantle of Spider-Man since the 2014 movie, but Emma Stone said she still feels "protective of that version [Garfield's] of Spider-Man". She added "But there's been some wonderful Spider-Men throughout history."
The actress denied all claims of her character being involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home, expressing she was familiar with the rumors, but she wasn't going to be in the film.
"I have heard those rumors. I don't know if I'm supposed to say anything, but I'm not [involved]" she finally shared.
The actress will be next seen as the memorable Disney villain Cruella de Vil in a new live-action film titled Cruella.
