Why Was Emma Stone Replaced By A Double?

Released in 2011, 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' might be one of the most underrated rom-coms of the 2010s. It was a hit at the box office, bringing in $145 million. This was in large part thanks to the stacked cast, featuring Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon and others.

The fan reaction was extremely positive, and Emma Stone herself stated she fell in love with the script instantly.

“I was really in love with that script, but I put so much pressure on myself,” Stone told Chalamet alongside Variety. “I was 20, and while we were shooting it, I was just going nuts and was like, this whole thing could fail. It felt like it had to be well-calibrated throughout, and it was the first time that I had ever had to rely on myself to be able to carry all of that.”

The pressure did not overwhelm Emma, as she was brilliant in the role. However, she did reveal that a certain scene was not easy to pull off. In fact, she panicked and ultimately a double had to step in. Let's take a look at what went down.

Emma Stone Had Panic Attack Before The Dirty Dancing Scene In 'Crazy, Stupid, Love'

Alongside Collider, Emma Stone revealed that she completely panicked the day of the 'Dirty Dancing' scene shoot. Things spiraled for the actress, especially due to an injury she sustained at the age of seven. "Yeah, we had practiced it a couple of times but for some reason on the day—[she whistles]. I broke both my arms when I was seven, falling forward off the parallel bars in gymnastics and I didn’t realize that I had a dormant primal fear until Ryan lifted me over his head and when I was over—I was like, ‘I can’t do this, I can’t do this’ and my body just completely collapsed into him and kicked him in the throat."

Ultimately, fans might not have noticed a double, given that the scene itself was purposely shot from far for the stunt double part.

Though Emma would reveal that she was still able to contribute to the scene in her own way. "The screams of my panic are the screams they used in ADR overlaying the stunt double that he lifted. So I’m very, very grateful and to directors [Glenn Ficarra and John Requa] for making use of that terrible, terrible panic."

Despite the hiccup, fans weren't fazed in the slightest, as the scene was a big time fan favorite with the viewers.

What Did The Fans Think Of The Scene?

Although a double was used for the move, fans still completely adored the scene - especially given the outstanding chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

"This scene caused Emma Stone to have a legit nervous breakdown. She had broken both arms doing gymnastics as a kid, and Ryan lifting her up brought that memory back up in her mind. That's why the lift scene is filmed from way back. Emma couldn't do it."

"“That would not work on me” A few glances exchanged and then cuts to them about to do it - Best scene of the whole movie."

"Stone's face when she says "ok" makes my heart flutter. Like, seriously."

"So ridiculous, all those Mickey Mouse club kids... now so beautiful and successful. How is this possible. Christina, Britney, Justin, Ryan... the rest?"

It was a successful scene and a great film that fans continue to appreciate over a decade later. From that point on, Emma Stone's career blossomed to the next level.
