Both Stars And The Production Team Will Return

Both stars will be returning to their roles as the Holmes siblings. Also returning are director Harry Bradbeer and screenwriter Jack Thorne, who wrote the first instalment.

“I can’t wait to collaborate again with my Enola Holmes family! Enola holds a special place in my heart – she’s strong, fearless, intelligent and brave,” Brown said in a statement. “I look forward to fans seeing how her journey continues!”

Millie Bobby Brown has read the Nancy Springer books, and has been attached to the project since 2019 as a producer along with sister Paige. The first movie was set for a theatrical release by Warner Bros., plans that were scuttled because of the pandemic in 2020. Netflix subsequently bought the distribution rights.

Netflix estimated that the first Enola Holmes movie was screened by 76 million households within the first four weeks of its release. The streaming service uses a so-called two-minute eyeball standard, meaning they count every stream of at least the two minutes of the movie.

Legendary, the production company that worked with Brown on the Godzilla movies, will continue to be a part of the sequel, with producers Mary Parent, Alex Garcia and Ali Mendes. Millie Bobby and Paige Brown will also serve as producers through their PCMA Productions company. Legendary’s Joshua Grode, Michael Dreyer, Bradbeer and Thorne will executive produce.

Sam Claflin plays Mycroft Holmes, the more difficult brother, and Adeel Akhtar portrays Holmes’ antagonist Lestrade. It seems more than just possible that the two characters that are integral to the Sherlock side of the story may return as well.

But, what about Helena Bonham Carter as the eccentric matriarch of the clan, Eudoria Holmes?

Carter has praised the role in interviews. “When Harry offered me the role, I told him, ‘Well, this may be the smallest part I’m ever going to play, but it’s also the best because she has so much color to her.’” The story may not have a part for her.

The Story And The Source Books

The story began in 1884 in England, during a time of social change. It was Enola’s 6th birthday.

Netflix has yet to announce any further details about the story or cast, but the Hollywood rumor mill is strong that the story will introduce Dr. John Watson.

The first Enola Holmes movie was based on the book titled The Case of the Missing Marquess, the first book in the series. If the movies follow the novels, the second called The Case of the Left-Handed Lady. The story focuses on Enola as a budding detective in her own right.

According to the book’s description, Enola is still hiding from her brother Sherlock and Inspector Lestrade, taking refuge in the crowded streets of London. She comes upon some drawings in charcoal and is immediately drawn to them. It makes her want to seek out the person who drew them. Enola finds out, though, that the artist, Lady Cecily, has mysteriously disappeared. Enola has to come out of her secretive lifestyle to find out what happened to her, but the more she finds out, the more she’s putting herself at risk.

Although there is no set start date, production on Enola Holmes 2 could begin as early as fall 2021.
