Getting nominated for an Oscar in 2001 for Training Day, it was supposed to be a special moment for Ethan Hawke, and a career-changing one at that. However, things ended up going in the opposite direction.

Alongside GQ, Hawke recalled the career changing moment. "In a lot of ways, it could have been the beginning of something. It was the best moment of my career. Like, maybe, maybe, you could be commercially viable."

However, behind the scenes, the moment was completely lost on Hawke, given his marriage with Uma Thurman was falling apart.

"I got divorced and my personal life fell apart. I don’t know if you feel this way, but when you’re depressed, it’s really easy to see everything that is fake about other people and life, and I just started seeing all that. How phony celebrity was, how phony everything is. You channel your inner Holden Caulfield, you know?”

At the time of the divorce, there was strong speculation whether a certain nanny was implicated. Although Hawke denied the claims at the time, he ended up marrying Ryan Shawhughes.

In 2005, once the divorce got finalized, Ethan Hawke announced his relationship to the family nanny, Ryan Shawhughes. They ended up quietly getting married.

According to Hawke, there was no scandal or anything of the sort. The actor revealed that the two got together well after the divorce.

"I know people imagine some kind of Sound Of Music type love affair, but the truth is by the time Ryan and I were falling in love, it had been a long while since I had employed her," Hawke told the publication.

As for Uma Thurman, she did not factor in the relationship alongside the nanny. Instead, Uma Thurman took part of the blame for the failed marriage.

"You're a family, and then you're not a family in the same way. Our marriage failed. I should take full responsibility for the failure of my own marriage. Blaming anybody doesn't make you feel any better."

She continued, "It's excruciating, it's weird because you know you have a nice boyfriend and then husband, and the children are doing OK and work's OK. Then suddenly you cross these little ceremonies where it's all this, this is like a blizzard again … and you can't believe that you're feeling what you are feeling, and you are still so far from your life feeling whole again."

Maya Hawke Says The Divorce Brought Her Family Closer Together

Speaking alongside As If Magazine, Maya Hawke took a mature approach to her parents' separation. According to Maya, she didn't take her family time for granted once the split took place.

“You know, my parents’ divorce was really interesting and difficult in a lot of ways, but one wonderful thing that came out of it is that we don’t take one another for granted,” Hawke explains.

“Every weekend is a special weekend because there’s a high value placed on time spent together. You no longer have a feeling of infinite time; you quickly realize it’s borrowed time.”

Maya further revealed that she bonded with both her parents on different levels, something that might not have taken place had they stayed together.
