Dove Cameron is an American actress, feminist and singer, best known for her role in Descendants and Liv And Maddie. She is a daytime Emmy winner and released her debut EP in 2019.

Like most Disney/Disney Channel actors, Cameron has been a role model to children and those who watch her. Last year in an Instagram live, she came out as bisexual when she was talking about the video for her song, "We Belong," which featured same-sex couples in tender embraces, after fans claimed she was queerbaiting.

Living in the 21st century has encouraged many people to come out and embrace their sexuality because we are living in a more accepting world. Also being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and a public figure can inspire others to embrace their sexuality and live their truth.

With Pride Month being in June, here is everything Dove Cameron has said about coming out as bisexual.

10 "I Was Never Confused About Who I Was"

Talking with GayTimes, Dove Cameron said, “I was never confused about who I was. ... It felt like something that I could never talk about." Her decision to come out came after she acknowledged she was behaving like someone who was out and realized she wasn't. She wanted to represent who she was through her music because it's who she is. She didn't feel like she could continue making music without living as her true self.

9 "I've Been Hinting About My Sexuality For Years"

In an interview with GayTimes, Dove Cameron said, “I’ve hinted about my sexuality for years while being afraid to spell it out for everybody." She was never ashamed for being who she is, but she realized that she never actually came out to the public. However, she was acting super queer, so she decided to come out for the explanation of her "We Belong" video. Cameron has only dated men publicly, however.

8 "I Love Women So Much"

Cameron posts on Twitter a lot about her love for men and women. She is a feminist and a queer woman and has posted about how much she loves women. Some people who have just joined her Twitter were surprised to find this out, but she told fans who didn't know that she has always been bi. Her feed is filled with funny memes and inspiring tweets about loving who you love and being your true self.

7 She Feared She Wouldn't Be Accepted For Who She Is

Sharing her true self to the world wasn't easy. Even though living in the 21st century for those in the LGBTQ+ community is a lot easier than it was years ago, many people in the community still face hate and backlash. So, Dove Cameron didn't come out right away, because she feared she wouldn't be accepted for who she is. Her fears were soon gone, though, when everyone was very accepting.

6 "I'm Super Queer"

Although she came out as bi in her Instagram Live, Dove Cameron identifies more as queer. She is not a label person, however. “I’m not a label person, but I would say that I am queer and that’s probably my most accurate way to represent myself,” she told GayTimes. “With the process of coming out, it was about who I am as a whole rather than who I choose to date or sleep with. I’m choosing to love myself, to be who I am every day and not edit myself depending on the room that I’m in. I’m making no apologies for who I am.”

5 Characters She's Played Are Part Of The LGBTQ+ Community

So many in the LGBTQ+ community wish to see representation in the shows and movies they watch. Although it was never confirmed by any of the creators or directors, Dove Cameron herself has labeled her characters as a part of the community when friends asked about it on Twitter. For her characters in Liv And Maddie, she acknowledged that Maddie was "definitely gay," while Liv was bi. Her Descendants character, Mal is pan, according to her. Her character Ruby from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is asexual.

4 "I'm Choosing To Love Myself"

“With the process of coming out, it was about who I am as a whole rather than who I choose to date or sleep with. I’m choosing to love myself, to be who I am every day and not edit myself depending on the room that I’m in. I’m making no apologies for who I am," she continued for GayTimes. She doesn't put a label on herself, and it allows her to be empowered and love herself better. And loving yourself is one of the best things you can do.

3 She's Glad She Can Serve As An Inspiration For Fans

Since coming out, her Twitter and social media has been a safe space for those to come out and those in the community. "Ever since then (coming out), I’ve had such an unbelievable relationship with my fans and we have this very safe space that we’ve created," she told GayTimes. She told the magazine that she hoped it helped. Dove Cameron has helped lots of people come out and love their authentic self.

2 Others In The Entertainment Industry Who Are LGBTQ+ Inspired Her To Come Out

Dove Cameron cited some of her role models in the LGBTQ+ community as Ben Platt, Kristen Stewart and Cara Delevingne. "I feel like the industry has changed a lot in terms of having room for people with platforms to be human and not to be picked apart. When you are who you are, you assume people see that and then you realize, 'No, I have to come out otherwise people aren't gonna know.'" And those role models, who are not afraid to be themselves inspired her to come out. It led to her questioning if she could live her truth.

1 "I Thought People Wouldn't Believe Me"

She thought it was bizarre that she had to ask to mix in different orientations into her video. And because she did do that, she felt inclined to come out as she didn't want fans to think she was queerbaiting since "We Belong" was a big LGBTQ+ anthem. However, it was very hard because she didn't think people would believe her. However, the reception on social media was nothing but positive.
