Let's take a look at what we know about this film.

The Premise

The trailer for There's Someone Inside Your House is out now, which is thrilling for horror fans who can't wait to watch a new movie that's part of this genre. The movie is perfect for fans of Netflix's R.L. Stine Fear Street trilogy and promises to be fun and terrifying to watch.

Sydney Park plays the main character Makani who has just moved to a small town in Nebraska. Things in the town become scary and creepy pretty quickly as there's a serial killer on the loose who is going after her peers.

Sydney shared more about her character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The actress said, "Makani is a young woman from Hawaii and she goes to live with her grandmother in Nebraska. She's sort of an outsider amongst her outsider friends at her Nebraska high school. We come to learn that Makani is carrying something heavy, we know she has a secret, we just don't know what it is yet. So when all these kids start dying brutally and their damning secrets are brought to light, Makani is under the impression that she's next or that someone knows something."

Henry Gayden wrote the movie's screenplay, and his other writing credits include 2019's Shazam! and 2023's Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The movie is directed by Patrick Brice, who is known for writing and directing the 2014 movie Creep and the sequel Creep 2, which was released in 2017.

The Book

Stephanie Perkins was interviewed by Mostly YA Lit and explained that since she's a fan of horror movies that can be pretty gory, it made sense to write the novel this way.

Stephanie shared, "Yeah, gore isn’t for everyone, either, but it felt natural for me to include it simply because I do enjoy that kind of horror—as long as it serves a narrative purpose. My inspiration is cinematic. I’m constantly testing myself with the worst of the worst, like films that have been banned in multiple countries."

Stephanie also told Publisher's Weekly more about her love of the genre, which is fun for fans of the same movies to hear about. The author explained, "I am interested in all genres of horror. Slashers are my favorite. I got interested in horror when I was a teenager in the 90s, at the height of films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. So those movies are the biggest influence on this book. A contemporary one I love is All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. It’s kind of a cult hit but it’s slowly getting a following. On television, American Horror Story is also great."

Since Stephanie Perkins is famous for her YA romance books, such as Anna And The French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door, it has been really fun to watch her branch out into horror and it sounds like she has been fascinated by the genre for a long time. In both There's Someone Inside Your House and Stephanie's new book The Woods Are Always Watching, she makes sure that the characters are richly drawn and that they have important relationships. When speaking to Twirling Pages, Stephanie explained that the horror book does have romance in it and "romantic authenticity is in having flawed characters that bring out the best in each other."
