Alyssa McKay has 2.5 Billion (yes, with a B) monthly views on Snapchat alone, 1.1Million YouTube subscribers, 10.1Million TikTok followers, and close to 1Million on Instagram ... and she's still just getting warmed up.

Next on her list to world domination? Podcasting.

Not just any podcast, mind.

Alyssa is about to become the voice of Ella Sinclair - main character of the hugely popular The Paper Princess young adult novel by Erin Watt.

We sat down with Alyssa to hear more about the podcast adaptation of the book, The Royals of Malibu, how she got involved in the project, and why being part of a podcast drama is so different to the content she's used to.

This Might Just Be The New "Gossip Girl"

Asked how she'd describe The Royals of Malibu, Alyssa's excitement is palpable.

"It's like listening to a TV show," she beams.

In fact, she says that the closest thing she could compare it to is Euphoria or Gossip Girl.

"The Royals of Malibu follows the story of my character, Ella. She's 17, her parents aren't in the picture, and she's a cam girl to get by. Then, she's picked up and thrown into the center of Malibu, to live with her dad's best friend."

"It's really good," she continues - adding that she was actually blown away by just how good it was, the first time she heard it.

"When I first listened, I was on a little 'hot girl walk,'" she laughs.

"The director texted it to me, and I was just like, 'OMG.' The way it's edited is even better than I could have imagined."

Alyssa Reminisces On Her Whirlwind Casting

Speaking of the director and those behind the scenes, Alyssa laughs that her casting, alone, was like something out of a movie.

"The casting team originally thought of me for the role of the host - like the 'Gossip Girl' of the series."

However, curiosity on her manager's part soon changed all that.

"My manager asked if they'd cast Ella yet, and they said no - but if I could audition that day, they'd take a look."

Alyssa was on a tight schedule, as is.

"I had an Uber coming to pick me up in, like, 20 minutes to take me to JFK, because I was flying to London," she reflects.

However, she was determined to send in her audition - and that she did.

"I had been up for 27 hours when I did the audition, and then I flew to London, so I was exhausted ... but three days later, I booked it!"

"Everything was really fast and unexpected," she gushes.

A little like her character's storyline, really ...

Alyssa Opens Up About The Parallels Between Her And Ella Sinclair

That Alyssa had a whirlwind audition experience is almost par for the course.

After all, asked what she had in common with Ella Sinclair, she giggles, "A better question would be, what parallels do we not have?"

Pointing out that in any role she's been involved in, she's always tried to find connections to the character - "I want my performance to feel as authentic as possible" - even Alyssa was struck by just how much she had in common with Ella.

"In the story, she's orphaned, and I grew up in foster care from the age of 9 until 21, so really only a year and a half ago. I built a better life for myself, and now I'm a first generation college student, so in terms of the 'rags to riches' story, we were really similar that way."

"She's really tough and resilient ... it's just crazy how much we have in common," she muses.

That's not to say there aren't any differences, though.

In fact, asked about the biggest difference between the podcast and the content she's used to creating, Alyssa points immediately to the collaborative aspect of The Royals of Malibu.

"All my content is just me, doing it by myself," she explains.

And, while she loves the freedom that gives her, Alyssa continues that being involved in a project with so many people and moving parts was a major highlight.

"Just being a part of something bigger than myself was the coolest part of it all."

So, what can listeners look forward to, in The Royals of Malibu?

Let's just say, this is one podcast drama that gets off to a quick start - but according to Alyssa, it only gets better as it goes on.

"It gets really, really, really juicy around episode 5, so I'm really excited for the second half of the season to come out."

"It's intense," she promises, concluding our chat.

This is one podcast drama you definitely don't want to miss!
