We see a lot of things in our lifetime. We see the world around us through our eyes, no matter if what we see is bad or good. The world has a lot to offer, including things we cannot see with just our eyes. In the biggest mountain in the world lies the smallest particles – so small that we need a microscope to see them. Most of us probably haven't had a microscope handy since we were in high school, so we can't really do this experiment ourselves. Luckily for humanity, the internet can help us out with that.
Some things that we think are beautiful and innocent might look scary under the microscope while everyday objects look like a masterpiece. Whichever way it goes, the below photos are oddly satisfying and make us want to see more. Feast your eyes on these close-ups and prepare to be amazed, confused and maybe a bit scared.
10 A Crack In A Piece Of Steel
At first glance, this looks like an Instagram photo of a canyon, but it is far from that. This is actually a crack in one of the toughest materials on our planet: steel. To the naked eye, steel is usually cold and silver-colored and here, it's completely different; it's actually quite interesting to look at.
Knowing that it looks like something completely different without a microscope is mind-boggling and the fact that it has rainbow-type colors throughout it makes it that much cooler. Seeing a piece of steel in everyday life isn't anything spectacular, but under a microscope, everything changes.
9 Household Dust
This close-up picture looks like it could be a number of items. In fact, it kind of looks like a pattern on a piece of clothing from the 1980's, but we know it's nothing of the sort. A colorful shirt from the past is fun to look at, but what this is actually is, is something we're used to throwing away immediately after finding it: dust.
We're aware that we could be sweeping up a ton of different pieces of fabrics, lint, etc., but we didn't think it would look as colorful as this. Up close, household dirt doesn't look like something we'd want to sweep up and forget about the next moment.
When we're outside and taking in all nature has to offer, there are a lot of things we come across. The above picture might look like something we'd find out on a nature walk, but it's the complete opposite.
These bad boys are actually eyelashes. We can all agree that these look like some sort of weed growing out of the ground, but at the same time it makes perfect sense that these would be eyelashes. The world is a crazy place!
7 Used Floss
Going to the dentist isn't a fun adventure. Even if it's just for a checkup, anything could happen. Just the thought of having a cavity is making us twitch and this is why you definitely want to use the above item. It looks like it's some sort of scientific bacterial experiment, but it's much less complex than that. These are used pieces of dental floss.
We know it's gross, but we'd never think that a measly little piece of floss would look as cool as this. That is, of course, if you can get over what the purple stuff is.
6 Salt And Pepper
Whether we eat out or eat in, sometimes our meal needs a little help. We need to give it that extra boost of flavor or spice to make it just what we want. Luckily, there is an abundance of herbs, spices, salts, and types of pepper that can help us out with that. Speaking of, that brings us to our next microscopic find. The above picture may look like mini marshmallows and rocks and in reality, that's not what these bits and pieces are at all.
What we're looking at are pieces of salt and pepper, enlarged and looking very strange. It's weird to think that this is what we use on our meals each day and we'll probably never look at salt and pepper the same again.
5 A Banana
This photo is quite unique. It looks like it could be some sort of mushroom out in the wild, but then again, it looks like it could be an alien spaceship opening up its portal. It also kind of looks like rain right in the middle and in reality, all of these are far from the truth.
This is your every day, delicious banana, probably taken right from a local grocery store. We can see that it's a banana based on its color, but everything else quite a surprise. Next time we eat a banana, we'll be thinking of mushrooms, aliens, and rain.
4 Pineapple Leaves
At first glance, this looks like a really pretty pattern that someone would probably find on a piece of clothing or a wall. No one would think that this is a piece of food. This "pattern" is actually a close-up of a bunch of pineapple leaves. A pineapple is an attractive fruit to look at, but we'd never think of it if we didn't know what we were looking at above.
This is proof that something pretty cool to the naked eye can be even cooler when it's magnified and turned into something completely different!
Of all of the items on this list, this one is probably the most obvious. Even though it's pretty clear what this item is when it's magnified, it doesn't mean that it isn't beautiful and definitely worthy of this list.
2 Sand Grains
The most beautiful things in the world are full of color and shapes. The above photo has plenty of both and these type of stones seems like something you'd find in a specialty shop, but it might be easier and cheaper to find it on the beach or by a lake.
Under this microscope, there aren't any unique types of rocks or stones, it's just your typical sand grains that you'd find at the beach. Next time we're taking a stroll by a body of water, we'll appreciate the sand between our toes a bit more.
1 Guitar string
This last one is probably one of the trickiest to decipher of them all. Although we are aware of what it is now, we'd all probably be stumped otherwise. It looks like it might be a body part that belongs to an alien, but it's the complete opposite.
This is none other than a magnified guitar string and it looks nothing like it. When we look at a guitar string, it's nimble, sleek and long. This looks bulky and colorful, everything a guitar string isn't. This is just one of the things a magnified object can look like and it's astonishing.
