Ideas: we all have them. Whenever a game gets announced, or a leak is revealed, our mind wanders on what this new game could be like. Teaser trailers are especially difficult because we have only a smattering of information to go off like that very first tease for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Even if our wild theories or predictions don’t come true, it is still fun to speculate. At least that is true for me.
So I went ahead and looked around DeviantArt and other fan based art websites to find some cool ideas for Nintendo games. What if Link was a cowboy for example? These redesigns aren’t explicitly pitching a game idea of course, but thanks to my imagination, they were enough to get the old ball rolling.

You can make fun of the Super Mario Bros. movie all you want, but it did have some good ideas. They had nothing to do with the games of course, but I think a dystopian Mushroom Kingdom with a Mario cyborg sounds great. This art is definitely inspired by it.

On Cosmopoliturtle‘a page, they have a ton of other Pokémon redesigns. What I like about this and the others is that they aren’t trying to be realistic. They’re just fun what if scenarios. Some are better than others as the saying goes.

Can you imagine what a samurai version of The Legend of Zelda would be like? I’m drooling just thinking about it. The ninja pursuers and the layout of Kakariko Village in Breath of the Wild is the closest we have come.

What if Samus was a teenager and didn’t have a suit all her own? Instead she would summon the Varia suit like a Persona. I would be down for a Nintendo High School with not just her, but the other mascots summoning Personas as well.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was not the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei crossover I was hoping for. Pop idols? It was certainly weird I will give it that, but this interpretation, like the Samus one, is more what I was looking for.

That name is a reference to the canceled Mega Man X reboot that Armature Studio was working on. It was a more realistic take for the series and was a first-person shooter. That’s what this art reminds me of long story short. If you are interested, check out that game.

Kirby is cute on the outside, but have you ever stopped to think what you’re doing? You’re eating people. Bad people? Yes, but Kirby’s powers are unstoppable. This depiction shows the true colors of a monster whose appetite cannot be satisfied.

The Star Fox story has been retold again and again. What if they dropped the angle of saving the galaxy and instead focused on saving one planet? That is to say what if they were ace pilots in an alternate WWII scenario?

I don’t know what would be a cooler setting for the next Switch Zelda game. The samurai idea from earlier, or an 80s inspired dystopian adventure. They both sound so good! It’s not a matter of if, but when.

Let’s keep the high school idea of Samus, but drop the Persona angle. The freckles in this piece makes me want to see a younger Samus in action. It also kind of looks like an Overwatch redesign. That would be a cool crossover too by the way.

Wow! That is one beefy rendition of Mega Man. Truthfully he should be a lot bulkier. This is like what if Mega Man was Robocop, or something. It actually looks like his head is glued onto a mech, or something.

There has been over a hundred Mario titles up to this point and only one, ONE, stars Peach in a solo adventure! I want her to kick butt with the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom gals. I love the Final Fantasy warrior vibe here.

This crossover is simple, but dark. What if the monsters you hunted in Monster Hunter were Pokémon? Skinning them for weapons and armor sounds rough, but I won’t lie and say it doesn’t entice me either. Nintendo, you should get ahold of Capcom.
EarthBound and the entirety of the Mother series is pretty grim when you think about it. That said the bright colors and quirky characters are there to distract you from what’s really going on. What if this series wore its dark side on its sleeve though? A gritty reboot of EarthBound is what this redesign of Ness desires.
Admittedly playing as an old man version of Link isn’t as mesmerizing as the 80s, or samurai theme. However, if Nintendo ever wanted to end the series, this is the way it should go out just like Fox did with Wolverine via Logan. This Link has seen a thing, or two.
What if Sora was a girl instead in Kingdom Hearts? It certainly would create a whole different dynamic. As much as I like the lovable goof of the real Sora, seeing a female version also sounds cool. Of course that already exists via Xion, well, kind of. This series is messed up.
This recreation of Mega Man makes me think of inFAMOUS for some reason. I think it’s his backpack. Anyway I would totally be down to play a Mega Man game set in an open world where different districts are controlled by Robot Masters. Defeat all eight and you can take Wily down!

Technically this idea of Samus piloting a mech has been done in a game via Metroid Prime Federation Force. That was lame though and this artist did a better job of recreating what a giant Varia Suit would look like. The cat is a nice touch too.

Funnily enough Raf Grassetti is the art director at Sony Santa Monica and yes, he worked on the recent God of War. Can you imagine what a Donkey Kong Country reboot would be like if it looked and played like God of War? I am sold!

Can you imagine living in a world where Hayao Miyazaki directed an animated feature based on The Legend of Zelda? Oh baby! I’m crying just thinking about it, but no. Nintendo instead thought hiring the Minions studio to make a Mario feature was a better idea.
