This recent update on Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship has caused fans to beg for their divorce.
During a recent interview with GQ Magazine titled “Introducing The Real Will Smith”, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air star, Will Smith opened up about his 24-year marriage with Jada Pinkett Smith.
During the article, Smith highlighted how his “unconventional relationship” with the Girls Trip actress had stemmed from the way in which Pinkett Smith had perceived romantic relationships growing up.
Smith stated, “Jada never believed in conventional marriage.… Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up." He continued, "There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.”
The Men In Black actor then continued to share details on his marriage as he stated, “We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”
Following the release of the article, fans took to Twitter to troll the pair. Many struggled to comprehend the reasoning behind their open relationship. They argued that if Smith and Pinkett Smith felt imprisoned within their relationship then they should not be married in the first place.
For example, one wrote, “But why did they get married in the first place. This behavior is the opposite of what marriage is.”
Others supported this claim as they pointed out that due to the pair’s children maturing into adults, there had been no need for them to stay together any longer.
Meanwhile, another criticized the pair for their “disrespectful behavior”. They stated, “Coming from someone whose been married 30 years this is disgusting and disrespectful to your whole family! Shameful please don’t take marriage advice from actors.”
Some even believed that the truth behind their relationship's “freedom” was actually due to their incapacity to remain faithful. They stated, “Weirdest couple ever. Using words like “relational perfection” to obscure the issue that they absolutely NEED to get their freak on - on a regular basis. Morals and nuptial promises be damned!”
Another Twitter user agreed with this claim as they branded the Smith couple as “swingers.”
