Most people tend to agree that R. Kelly has done bad things. There's also the fact that a court found him guilty of some pretty awful stuff to reinforce the fact that he's, to put it plainly, not a nice guy.

Yet there are people who continue to defend him. His music sales have skyrocketed since he was found guilty, and his lawyers even tried to compare him to Martin Luther King Jr.

Unfortunately, people defending R. Kelly's behavior isn't anything new. In fact, there are quite a few fans who seem to agree that R. Kelly is more of a Hugh Hefner type than a predator.

Fans Say R. Kelly's Victims Were Mostly Of Age

The sticking point for some fans' defense of R. Kelly? The fact that "98% of the victims discussed in the Surviving R. Kelly documentary series were of legal age of consent."

One particularly adamant fan thought that R. Kelly received a bad rap for simply being powerful, rich, and attractive to "aspiring singers."

What's more, the fan claimed, those "aspiring singers" probably thought they'd get a "leg up" in the industry after getting involved with Kelly.

The fan does acquiesce that Kelly's actions with underage people were "inexcusable and should be subject to scrutiny." but largely defends him as being a Hugh Hefner rather than an actual predator.

Some Fans Say R. Kelly Is A 'Black Hugh Hefner'

The fan's spiel, posted in the aptly-titled subreddit r/unpopularopinion, compared him to Hefner for a few reasons.

While the original opinion was shared three years ago -- before R. Kelly was declared guilty -- the main argument is that R. Kelly had fame, power, and money, and that the only people complaining about him were ones with "vendettas."

In essence, the fan claimed that R. Kelly's former partners and former employees were out to get him because they weren't happy with what they got out of their respective arrangements with him.

But, that fan, whose post was about 59 percent "upvoted," suggested that Kelly truly was a Hugh Hefner of his industry. He had "mass sugar daddy agreements" with a long list of women, they propose, and while it's "bizarre," the fan disagreed that Kelly had a cult or was hurting anyone.

There is some redemption in that particular fan's thread, though; the top-voted response pointed out that underage people can't consent to anything. It also highlighted the grooming behaviors that were no doubt involved in R. Kelly's "marriage" to Aaliyah, as well as other negative actions against various women.

Though Kelly clearly still has supporters, the original fan who garnered so much support for their "unpopular" opinion later deleted their Reddit account. So maybe they did learn, after Kelly's trial began, that they were in the wrong after all.
