*This article discusses minor spoilers for The Suicide Squad*

James Gunn’s over-the-top DC adventure The Suicide Squad offered fans a glimpse into a whole new Harley Quinn.

Fear not: Margot Robbie did return to the role of the popular, high-pitched villainess she first played on 2016’s Suicide Squad and in the feminist, furiously fun Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan.

The character of Joker’s former lover and accomplice, however, shows some subtle changes in her appearance in the new R-rated romper from Guardians of the Galaxy’s director. Harley also appears to have grown and healed, proving she has gone through some serious character development that fans didn’t fail to notice and appreciate.

Harley Quinn Is No One’s Property On ‘The Suicide Squad’

In the new DC supervillain unite movie, Robbie reprises the role of Harley Quinn, teaming up with a whole new gang of baddies.

Their mission is to destroy a Nazi-era science laboratory on the island of Corto Maltese, now under an anti-American regime.

Quinn gives fans a glimpse of her tattoo on her back while wearing a red tulle gown. The infamous “Property of Joker” tattoo the character sports on Suicide Squad — paired with a subtle “Property of Joker” jacket — seems to be no longer there.

In the first Suicide Squad film, Harley was in a whirlwind, abusive bond with Joker, played by Jared Leto. But in Gunn’s movie, the tattoo hinting at their toxic relationship has been changed to “Property of no one,” which is likely a reference to Harley’s empowering journey on Birds of Prey.

Moreover, Harley’s jacket had been updated to read “Live Fast, Die Clown” and her “Rotten” tattoo on the cheek is gone, too.

Is A Queer Romance Between Harley Quinn And Poison Ivy Next  In A DC Movie?

But that is not all, as Harley’s character development isn’t just limited to her appearance. No spoilers but suffice to say that, in the new film, the villainess makes healthier choices when it comes to her boyfriends.

“I loved Harley Quinn’s character development in #TheSuicideSquad. We’ve come full circle. It’s time for a Poison Ivy team up movie,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

This new direction had fans hoping that a romance with fellow female baddie Poison Ivy — already explored in the comics and in the animated series Harley Quinn — might be the next step in the DCEU.
