Simone Biles experienced a week that every athlete hopes to never see. Biles was visibly lost in the air when she took to the vault and was faced with a scary landing.

The fear and the immense pressure to be without fault hindered her ability to perform. Biles knew she had to make a decision that was bigger than the competition.

So America's most decorated gymnast did the unthinkable and took herself out of the competition at the Tokyo Olympics. Her fellow teammates had to step up to the plate during the women’s gymnastics team competition.

Her health and safety come before any gold medal. It is not worth a potentially serious injury if her head is not in it.

“I know that this Olympic Games, I wanted it to be for myself,” Biles said afterward, tearing up. “I came here, and I felt like I was still doing it for other people. So that just hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me to please other people.”

Biles left the floor, but returned to show her support for her team from the sidelines.

Simone Biles shared a post via Instagram.

“It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The olympics is no joke! BUT I’m happy my family was able to be with me virtually they mean the world to me!”

She also thanked her girls for stepping up when she didn’t have the mental capacity to do so. Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, and Grace McCallum showed what a real team is for.

At the end of the competition, the US team earned a silver medal, placing second to the Russian Olympic Committee team.
