Mike Myers’ Hollywood career has been incredible to watch unfold, as he went from stealing the show on Saturday Night Live to dominating the big screen with franchises like Austin Powers and Shrek. The man has an ability to make people laugh the few can rival, and when it is all said and done, no one will be able to question his place in film history.

As great as things were for the star during his peak, things have slowed down for him in recent years. Many fans feel that one box office bomb was the cause of this, and the film has done little more than go down in infamy.

So, which movie do fans feel changed everything for Mike Myers’ career in the worst way possible? Let’s take a look and see who the culprit is.

Mike Myers Was A Hollywood Heavyweight

A quick look through the history of modern comedic performers will show that during his prime, Mike Myers was the man and was basically printing money thanks to the success of his biggest and most memorable projects. SNL was the perfect launching pad for Myers during the 90s, and once he hit the big screen, there was simply no looking back for the hilarious performer.

Now, it should be noted that Myers actually found success in film back when he was still on SNL, as Wayne’s World was a smash hit back in 1992. Myers left the the show in 1995, and he continued finding success in major projects. In 1997, for instance, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery hit theaters and spawned a successful trilogy that has been begging for a fourth film for years.

In 2001, Myers kickstarted the Shrek franchise with an iconic voice performance as everyone’s favorite ogre. Getting one franchise is rare, but launching two of them within four years just proves that Myers had the hot hand during that time. The actor was exceptionally busy with both franchises, and he was still taking roles in movies like The Cat in the Hat.

As great as things were going for Myers, fans have noticed that his output in successful films has slowed down considerably in recent years.

Things Have Slowed Down For Him

Despite being a successful leading man for many years, Mike Myers’ recent work is few and far between. Not only that, but the actor isn’t typically leading these projects that he has been appearing in. Instead, he is taking smaller roles, which has been a surprise for many to see.

Myers has had some wins since his peak years, but again, the roles have been in a smaller capacity. For instance, Myers had a brief role in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Myers played General Ed Fenech in the film, and most people didn’t even catch the fact that it was him initially.

A similar occurrence would take place back in 2018 when Myers appeared as Ray Foster in Bohemian Rhapsody. He only appeared in a couple of scenes in the movie, and while the scenes were memorable, it took fans a moment or two to realize that it was Myers playing the character.

Myers’ time in film is a far cry from what it once was, and many point to one particular movie that could have tanked everything.

Back in 2008, Mike Myers starred in The Love Guru, which was crushed by the critics and was a major disappointment at the box office. The previews alone looked rough, and it didn’t take long for people to pile on the hate for the film after it made its debut on the big screen.

Myers took home the Worst Actor and Worst Screenplay awards at the Golden Raspberry Awards after the film’s release, and it seemed like everything shifted for the actor in the blink of an eye. His output was noticeably slower after the movie’s failure, as was his willingness to take secondary roles.

According to IMDb, Myers is currently attached to a few different projects, and it will be interesting to see if he will try his hand at being a star once more or if he will still be taking secondary roles. He is in a David O. Russell project which boasts an incredible cast featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, Margot Robbie, Zoe Saldana, and Timothy Olyphant, which sounds like some dream casting.
