8 The Round Or Brilliant Cut Diamond

The round diamond is the signature classic diamond. It is also the most popular cut of diamond. Invented in 1919 by a mathematician, Marcel Tolkowsky, who was able to figure out the exact proportions and cuts to make the brilliant cut diamond sparkle so beautifully. Another huge plus of the round diamond is that it tends to look good on everyone, no matter the shape or size of their finger.

Those with long fingers may go with a solitaire and thin band, while a wider finger has the ability to pull off accent stones or side stones better. The three stone diamond ring, for example, representing the past, the present, and future, has been a classic style for the last decade. One even adorns the finger of a certain Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. In fact, two of her three diamonds are from Princess Diana's personal collection.

7 The Princess Cut Diamond

The princess cut is a square-shaped diamond. While not quite as popular as the round diamond, this cut is a very close second. There is no clear origin of the princess-cut diamond. Nevertheless, it is beautiful just the same. While anyone can wear whichever diamond they choose, princess-cut diamonds tend to look best on long slender fingers and those with small hands.

6 The Oval Diamond

The oval diamond maintains a sparkle similar to a brilliant cut diamond. The benefit being the surface area of the diamond. More bang for your buck. The oval cut can also be placed the long way for small hands or long fingers; and sideways for shorter or wider fingers. Celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian, Blake Lively, and Scarlett Johansson all sport some pretty hefty oval cut diamonds.

5 The Emerald Cut Diamond

The emerald cut diamond is beauty and grace. This more rectangle-shaped diamond can also be versatile by keeping it the long way or turning it on its side. One thing about emerald-cut diamonds is that the more flawless they are, the better they look. It's hard to hide even a small flaw or discoloration with this cut stone.

Emerald cut is a very classy cut; it is a stand alone piece, meaning you don't need a flashy fancy band or anything. In fact, it looks the most beautiful on its own. This cut is also popular with celebrities. Paris Hilton, Demi Lovato, Beyoncé, and Kate Hudson are just a few who carry [or have carried] an emerald cut on their left ring fingers.

4 The Pear Shape Diamond

The pear-shaped diamond is what is known as a fancy cut. This cut of diamond can be worn with the point facing upward, or down. A little tip is, if someone has short fingers, wearing the pear shape with the tip pointing toward the fingernail will help to elongate the finger.

Pear's also have a bigger surface area, so even if it's not a shallow cut, it still tends to look bigger than it is. While it comes and goes in popularity, it didn't keep Cardi B or Ariana Grande from once wearing their pear-shaped engagement rings.

3 The Marquise Cut Diamond

The marquise cut or diamond shaped cut hit its peak between the 1960's and 1980's. Currently, it is seen more as a side stone or accent stone in addition to the center stone. This shape looks amazing on those with short slender fingers. It really makes them appear longer. Depending on the carat weight, those with larger hands or longer fingers can really pull this off too.

When a marquise cut is worn on wider fingers, it should be done on a fancy band or wide band. Given its long, narrow appearance, it can make the finger look even wider otherwise. Victoria Beckham and Catherine Zeta Jones both received marquise cut engagement rings.

2 The Asscher Cut Diamond

The asscher cut diamond is cut similarly to the emerald cut. It is more of a square shape, though, versus a rectangle. As with emerald cuts, the asscher is a more expensive cut because it needs to be a very high quality stone. These look best on a small hand, long finger, and/or slender finger. Gwyneth Paltrow was once bestowed an asscher cut diamond ring. Pippa Middleton and Jessica Alba also have asscher cuts.

The most famous asscher cut however belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. Given to her by Richard Burton, it is by far one of the most exquisite engagement rings of all time. The cost of the 33.19-carat diamond engagement ring is estimated to be around 8.2 million dollars.

1 The Cushion Cut Diamond

Last, but certainly not least, the cushion cut. This is by far one of the most popular cuts among celebrities, and for good reason. It is stunning. Taking on a more square appearance, the cushion cut has rounded corners and deeper facets, allowing for much more sparkle than any other cut of diamond.

Due to the rounded corners, the cushion cut doesn't have the hard straight edge of a princess cut and therefore, looks beautiful on any finger. Quite possibly one of the most famous cushion cuts is Kim Kardashian's 15 carat flawless one that she got from Kanye West.
