There's hardly a successful person on this planet who hasn't been fired before. Whether justified or not, getting axed by an employer always hurts, but it is entirely normal. And while being fired via a fax may sound completely impersonal, it's not entirely the strange given that this incident happened in the 1990s when faxes were still a thing. Still, for a comedian coming up the ranks, receiving such a seemingly heartless fax from the legendary Saturday Night Live must have hurt. Fortunately for the comedian, Sarah Silverman, she eventually got over it.

For those who can't remember, Sarah Silverman did, in fact, appear as a cast member and a writer on the beloved NBC sketch series. Although, it was only for one season, from 1993-94. Unlike one Schitt's Creek star, Sarah did not reject the offer to appear on the series. But her time on SNL was short-lived and there's no doubt that the way she was fired was less than pleasant. Here's what happened...

The Truth About Sarah Silverman's Time On Saturday Night Live

Sarah Silverman was a cast member on Saturday Night Live a year after he began her stand-up career. But she only appeared on the show for one season in the 1993-94 year. This was during one of the show's heydays, with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Kevin Nealon, Tim Meadows, Mike Myers, and David Spade. This was a massive moment for Sarah as she hadn't been at the craft for very long. However, in hindsight, she claims that this was one of the reasons her time at Saturday Night Live simply wasn't all that great. It's not that she had a bad time with the cast members, it's more the fact that her work wasn't up to par.

Only one of the sketches that she wrote survived the dress rehearsal and the rest got axed. However, she did appear in a few sketches, although usually as a backup or secondary character. Still, her talents caught the attention of the likes of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross who had Sarah on their comedy sketch series, Mr. Show, shortly after she was fired from Saturday Night Live.

How And Why Sarah Silverman Was Fired From Saturday Night Live

Even though being fired via fax machine sounds like it could be personal and straight-up mean, the truth is that Sarah Silverman was actually fired alongside quite a few other people. While mainstays such as Adam Sandler, Norm Macdonald, David Spade, Chris Farley, and Kevin Nealon were kept around, other lesser-known stars were fired alongside Sarah Silverman.

While being cast on Saturday Night Live was certainly a highlight in the early career of the now-famous star, Sarah does realize that she wasn't anywhere as strong of a comedian as she is today. Meaning, Sarah Silverman knows she bombed a lot on stage in her early stand-up career and that includes her time acting and writing sketches on SNL. Even still, getting dismissed by Saturday Night Live wasn't as bad as it seemed as she was part of a cast that lost numerous members from one season to the next. The NBC sketch show was once notorious for doing this during the seasons they weren't raking in the numbers that they had been in their earliest years and in the latest ones.

"I was hired at SNL and almost immediately fired," Sarah Silverman said to Marc of HuffPost Live back in 2013. "I mean, it wasn't that I did something wrong. I was hired and then the following season they fired [everyone]. It was like a whole new kind of -- I think that was the last year of the old guard and then they started anew. And, by the way, I wrote not a single funny sketch. So that might have something to do with it."

"If you could do it again, would you do it differently?" HuffPost Live interviewer Marc asked her.

"Yeah! I'm funnier. I'm so much funnier. The fact that Lorne Michaels saw anything in me at that age and at that time for me where I don't think I was close to where I would become is impressive for him."

Of course, Marc had to ask Sarah about how she was fired from SNL given that it seemed strange that she wasn't called in, sat down, and gently dismissed.

"They don't do that," Sarah said of SNL. "It did not occur to me that I was not coming back. I was writing sketches. I was bringing it up to any cab driver that would listen."

"And then they faxed you a not coming back notice?"

"Yeah, I think they tell your agents or whatever, and then yeah. I'm getting over it though, it's been twenty years."
