The biographical drama marks the return of director David Fincher six years after his latest movie, thriller Gone Girl with Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck.

'Mank' Boasts A Star-Studded Ensemble

Mank will focus on screenwriter Mankiewicz as he is co-writing the script for the 1941 Oscar-winning, cult movie Citizen Kane, together with director and protagonist Orson Welles. The American filmmaker is portrayed by English actor Tom Burke. In the trailer, Burke addresses Oldman’s Mankiewicz in Welles’ unmistakable deep, heavy voice that had fans swooning over the similarity.

The star-studded cast also includes Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried, English-American actress Lily Collins, and Game Of Thrones’ Charles Dance.

Dance plays William Randolph Hearst, the businessman and editorial mogul who inspired Charles Foster Kane, the character portrayed by Welles on Citizen Kane. The English actor, who most recently starred as Tywin Lannister on the HBO fantasy series, appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the clip. Yet there is no doubt he will have a pivotal role in the upcoming drama.

The Story Behind The Screenplay Of 'Citizen Kane'

Hearst, in fact, wasn’t too happy about the blatant resemblance between himself and Kane, a corrupt newspaper editor. The movie will also tackle the obstacles Mankiewicz and Welles had to overcome to make a film calling out such a powerful figure as Hearst, whom the screenwriter used to know well.

But Mank will primarily zero in on the authorship of the screenplay for the film, that has been surrounded by several controversies throughout the years.

Welles kept parts of Mankiewicz’s version but also added his own scenes, with detractors criticizing the director for not giving the screenwriter his due. Despite production company RKO awarded Mankiewicz credit, the disagreement between him and Welles will never be dealt with. The duo won Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Award in 1942.

There is an interesting story, albeit not quite as troublesome, behind the screenplay for Mank, too. The script was written by David Fincher’s father, Jack Fincher, in the 1990s, and the filmmaker was supposed to direct the film following his success with the 1997 film The Game, starring Michael Douglas. The project, however, was put on hold and Jack passed away in 2003, leaving his son with the desire to bring it onto the big screen.

Mank will premiere in select theaters in November this year and will be released on Netflix on December 4
